Ds Wife,
Thank you for your kind words. I think in your husband's case, he is very lucky. You seem very supportive to him, that postitive attitude will play a big role with his recruiting process. It actually is a another factor that recruiting likes to see. Take care, and I wish you and your husband the best.

Hi all, Is there a reason why Edmonton's starting pay is so much lower than Calgary's? Is the cost of living dramatically lower in Edmonton over Calgary? Housing seems to be relatively close in pricing. What's the difference? Has anyone ever applied to Edmonton? If not, what was the deciding factor in bypassing Edmonton? Also, what about Lethbridge? I know they only hire like once a year since they're small but does anyone know what their starting pay is? It's not that pay is the main factor in determining a career (don't jump on my for asking about money), it's just that when you have a family to support it certainly plays a major part Thanks for the info. I really appreciate all the knowledge I've gotten from this board. D's Wife

Well, My husband passed his APCAT and WCT tonight. He'll do the PARE in 2 wks and then after eye surgery be ready to submit his application next month sometime (depending on his eyes). Very relieved to have passed the test section (for now). The recruiters were nice, saying that they're working with a 4-6 month timeline from start to finish at this point with the background check taking the longest amount of time. Excited to finally have the ball rolling D's Wife

Great to hear, I didn't realize that out of town applicants are allowed to take the exams before sumbitting in a pare test. Learned something new today. Take care, and on to the next step.

Good to hear that hubby passed. Where did he write? Are you two out of province or just out of town?
I am still waiting for backgrounds. My file manager said it would be at the end of March to be completed if everything goes fine. So hopefully eary April I will know if I make it in to training this spring. This is one of the hardest things to do, is to wait. Nothing more I can do, out of my hands now....tick tock..

Yes, Actually out of town applicants can do the testing before submitting any of the application. He just had to pay the fee and complete a one page application and then the rest of the package can go in when it's completed. We're out of province and they only come to our area twice a year apparently. They also advised him not to wait until he could pass the eye exam after his lazer surgery but just to go with a letter from the surgeon saying he was a good candidate and that surgery would be completed on the specific date. They seemed very positive and enthusiastic about receiving his application. There were only 10 people writing and they received their marks within 15 minutes after finishing which was a big bonus So now we'll work on the application and have it in the first week of April and then we wait . I hate waiting! Maybe our family holiday will be to Calgary this year for interviewing, hopefully it will be good weather and we can do the zoo and touristy things Staying optimistic, D's Wife

Anybody can do their exams before applying. You just book it and pay the $107.

For some reason, I had to complete everything in the application. Pare, medical authorization, eye examination, driving abstract, even a preliminary check over the application and disclosure. Then I was authorized for the APCAT and WCT. A written letter is sent out for authorization and then you book for your examination. I thought most people were subjected to this procedure as well?

That's proceedure for anyone in the immediate Calgary area. Out of town and out of province are allowed to write first if you pay the $107 app fee before doing the rest. But after the exam and results then you have to have everything in you app package, as you mentioned above. Never heard of an in town applicant being able to write first then apply if they pass. That's the whole reason I originally applied to the mounties. I didn't have the money for all the required info, to find out if I would even be able to pass the exams.

You applied to RCMP instead of the CPS because you couldn't afford $107? And how, pray tell, were you going to survive 6 months without any income if you went to Depot?
If you're that broke you should be getting your life in order before you're applying anywhere.

If you're that broke you should be getting your life in order before you're applying anywhere. First of all it was not that I didn't have have the money (I know thats what I wrote but let me explain) it was that I did not want to have to spend all the money ($107 app fee, $60 PARE, $125 CPR, $70 eye exam, $30 drivers abstract) over $350, before I could even take the test?? Sorry, you can say what you will, but not many people want to front that much money to find out they don't have the apptitude for it. Secondly, I had over $3000 already saved up for depot when I got defered so "surving" depot was taken care of. ....I'm not even gonna touch the last line of your comment.

I guess it pays to be in BC for some things, driver's abstracts are free The PARE is only $45 here but my husband has to include the $3000. to have his eyes fixed too. Oh well, when you have to pay so much I guess it means we won't be giving up even if he hits his first deferral. It's not a cheap process that's for sure and it's difficult paying for everything for what could be nothing in the end. It's definently something to consider an investment. D's Wife

JOURNEY:
"Sorry, you can say what you will, but not many people want to front that much money to find out they don't have the apptitude for it."
huh? Pretty much every single applicant does this. Of the hundreds of pending applications and the thousands before that virtually all of them paid these fees BEFORE taking the tests.
What your saying doesn't make sense anyways. You had 3 grand in the bank but didn't want to spend a couple hundred applying to CPS instead opting to apply to RCMP where you will be subject to half a year without pay?
Whether or not this police thing works out one thing is for sure, DO NOT become a financial planner!

The stupid thing about this is that from what I have heard the police everywhere in this country are dying for qualified applicants. All you hear in the news is how few applicants they are gettting.
You would think they would try to entice appliants by offering competative packages and maybe paying for the application process. I have a hard time believing the forces are getting the best applicants when they have to foot so much money upfront just to be abused by "certain" stages of the application. The real good candidates are working high paying jobs in the private sector and are laughing at the police all the way to the bank.
