Keep up the good work, all of you, and it will happen!Storm,remember-don't psych yourself out!You don't have to be the best Recruit in the academy, just WORK HARD as the best and you'l make it just fine. You are 1/3 of the way there-pass the academy(depot), and probation, andyour on the way to many yrs of fun, fear, boredom, bravery, frustration, hope, and pride that comes from wearing the badge. Maybe one day I'll see you running at Baker to Vegas relay (ask one of your academy instructors),and we'll talk....

Well I got the letter last week. "We regret to inform you but the RCMP is not able to offer you engagement at this time. Feel free to reapply two years from the date of this letter."
They did not tell me the reason for the deferal but I know it is due to a screwed polygraph from another force I applied to 5 years ago. I wish everyone here the best of luck! I am looking on the bright side here. Finnaly closure after two years of gut wrenching waiting, I have already put down a hold on a lot and will be building a new house ASAP. I can ask my girlfriend to marry me and we can get on with our lives. It is not what I wanted for the rest of my life but I know I can be happy in my current carreer. I am going to make application under the freedom of info and privacy act to get my RCMP file and hopefully find out for sure what defered me.
One word of advice for all applicants out there. PLEASE, PLEASE read through this web page and dissect the info regarding polygraphs. The web page anti polygraph.org (i believe) is absolutley invaluable! I fell victim to what they refer to as "falsified/fabricated confessions" and it could happen to anyone who is not aware! Once the polygrapher writes down what he interprets or fabricates about you, it is too late. These municiple forces do not fall under the freedom act and can keep that info/opinion for as long as they please and relay that info to any force you are applying for. Read the book "the truth behind the polygraph" and educate yourself. this especially goes for all the Calgary, Emonton, Vancouver, etc appplicants. Don't make the same mistake I did. The polygraphers are not there to help you get in, their job is to find/fabricate disqualifying tidbits about you!
READ UP ON THE WORKINGS AND DECEPTION OF THE POLYGRAPH. there is a reson the RCMP don't/can't legally use it in their application process but they will accept info from other services you have competed the poly at. Ya I am a little sour about the whole thing but "such is life" Good luck all!

hey jamaf,
i had my security interview today. i was in the same position as you were, thinking everything would be done on the same day. i have to go back in three weeks, so the wait continues. i wish it were all over today. but such is the life of an RCMP applicant. the security interview went ok. just a couple of stumbling blocks, just related to maturity. so i'm not sure if that will hurt me later on. do you know? i'm not sure how to read into this, passing the first interview, if it is a good sign for things to come or just another phase? any suggestions or comments anyone?

hey sporto,
sorry to hear the news. it must be frustrating, but on the bright side of things, now you can get on with your life, and i'm sure that two years down the road, if you're still willing, you'll be a much better applicant. two years is not a long wait. were you near the end of your application process? if so, why wouldn't they have told you earilier that you were not suitable b/c of the polygraph? i find that very unusual that they would carry someone through the entire process and then shut them down near the end. good luck to you.

Hey Sporto. I'm very sorry to hear about how it went. The RCMP is planning on using the polygraph. I believe it may now be manditory for new applicants. If not they seem to believe that it will be very soon. I have to admit the idea of a machine that I don't consider reliable deciding the rest of my life scares the hell out of me. I'm planning on telling the truth, if I'm ever tested(but , thats what everyone says right? ). Just out of curiousity, what went wrong on the polygraph for you? Did you lie? Did you tell the truth and still get screwed? I'm hoping for some honest answers so I'll be better prepared on what to expect and hopefully avoid being disqualified. -With regards to the polygraph I'm not sure what the best policy is. In general you are applying for a job, however if you're caught lying then you a)won't get it and b) could be fired even if you do get in. But then again I'm also unsure about such questions as have you ever done such and such? I'm sure we've all stolen something at some time or another even if I can't remember a specific event. Will one persons perception of what is immoral and what isn't affect the outcome? Basically if you ask me if I've done this or that, if I think back to general illegal stuff I'm sure I've done it. Ie speeding, stolen things stuff like that. Even if it was a long time ago.
-Also I have another question: If you do something that is considered illegal here, but you do it in a country where it isn't considered illegal (say marijuana for example) How is it viewed by the interviewing police force? I"m guessing that they don't distinguish between circumstances location etc. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks Sporto. I'm probably going to be trying for municipal police instead of the RCMP. My goal is to tell them everything up front, and I mean everything. If I'm not hired because of some of my past mistakes then so be it. It's better than pinning my hopes on a lie. Also the idea of being fired for something the police department finds out later would be too much to handle. How would you explain that to your family, parents and friends? So even with all of my mistakes I'll just bite the bullet, if I'm not suited for this line of work then I guess it wasn't meant to be. I'll read up on the poly stuff (we covered it a bit at university in psych) but I'll just try and be myself. Hopefully it'll work. -Thanks for the tip Sporto, I'll refuse to lie to "help them with their tunning of the machine" If they want me to say that my name isn't what it is then fine, but thats it.

I am down to the lasy day. Tomorrow morning I get on that plane and head to Regina. It only hit me yesterday that I am leaving. Naturally there is a lot of mixed feelings and emotion, but, there is no greater feeling in the world than knowing you are going to one of the few people in the world who gets to live out there dream.
Hopefully I will get the chance to meet some of you up there in Regina. Keep persistant and stay focused. Remember obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off of your goal.
All the best to everyone here.
