Rockstar, No BS...we went that long without pay. While Jamaf was at depot, I worked a maximum of 12hrs per week at a hardware store. We have 3 kids. But because the application process took nearly 2yrs, we started planning and saving right from the beginning. So, I agree with Journey as that was pretty much how things worked for us.

I have a hard time believing this. Few people can go 8 months without pay. If that was actually part of their hiring criteria almost nobody would make it past the credit check. Gotta call BS on that one. BTW I'm not being judgemental, this is what I was told. You are right few people can go 8 months without pay if they don't prepare. They are checking to see if that applicant is prepared enough or has the means to go up to 8 months without pay. The 6 months at Depot are unpaid.. plus most new Constable's I talked to this summer when I worked as a s/cst said they didn't recieve their first pay cheques for over a month. The "Debt" and "Bad Credit" you listed are also part of the process.#nosmileys

My apologies, I'm not so familiar with the RCMP process, I forgot about the no pay during training. Out of curiousity, why are you guys all so interested in the RCMP when they make it so painful? There are plenty of other police services that don't jerk you around AND pay you during training. Just wondering.

I am going for the RCMP because they have the best training (They even train FBI), they are part of the history of Canada and have the best looking uniforms. ;D

I am joining because I would prefer to work in a small community rather than with one of the large city police forces. Plus what RJB said, the training is second to none in the world. Also, my father was an RCMP officer and it is cool for me to follow in his footsteps a bit. Check out my website www.geocities.com/paulrcmp

When you put on your red serge and stetson hat and realize what a history you are part of, at that point in time you will realize the difference between being a "police officer" and a "MOUNTIE".
Cheers, RY

Got a call from recruiting. Interview number one will be the second week in February. Slowly but surely... Also went on a ride-along last week. Got me pumped back up about the process and reminded me what my ultimate goal is...

Got a call from recruiting today. They said my PARE expired, and asked if they could fax me a form to retest... apparently, they need it done 'ASAP', because my file is... and I quote directly here... "In Ottawa, and almost finished." I may get that call soon... here's hoping!

Basi Boy: Just put on my 25th coat last week. Wasn't quite cursing....but I'm definately glad they'll be going into the closet and only coming out on special occasions soon!
Macguy9: Good luck! Don't get your hopes up TOO high, but that's definately GOOD news!
Impy: Keep up with the ride-a-longs! They'll definately keep you motivated AND show you what policing is all about! It's not as glamourous as people think some times, so you'll be one of the people who go into it with your eyes wide open!
Good luck to all you applicants! Only one more week and I'm off to my detachment! Yee haw!
Cheers, RY

The only nice thing about the lack of sleep at Depot is the weekends. You usualy can catch up on your sleep. Other than that its 05:30 every morning and lights out at 23:00. That doesn't mean you have to be in bed. If you find yourself behind in a project you can stay up and work on it. All the Depot buildings are open 24hrs. After the first few days you settle into things and you get use to the lack of sleep. I was wondering the same thing. If the 5-6 hours of sleep is a norm for the weeknights, I can't see how that would aid the body and mind in learning. The last thing I want to do is spend 6 months getting sick and not learning what I am taught. Although it would appear that depot has operated like it does for 120 year with sucess.

You guys must have pretty easy lives. As soon as you have a home, kids, dogs etc. etc. You get LESS sleep than you're talking about. I normally go to bed at 12:00 and am up at 5:30 and I don't always get to sleep through the night. From what you're saying I would get MORE sleep at Depot than I do now! LOL
Besides that, what are you going to do if you become a cop? You're going to have some brutally long days. If you're worried about lack of sleep I'd suggest trying something a little more tame. Like maybe being a librarian.

Dear Guest. I have a set of 8 year old twins and a 4 year old. I KNOW something about sleep deprivation. The thing about Depot is that you are also physically and mentally tired as well. You also have that looming stress over your head "will I get through this" that is there until the day you get passed your badge. The lack of sleep doesn't stop once you become of member but there are days of rest in between and you don't have to worry about being sent home.

Like maybe being a librarian. Guest, My concern was of becoming exhausted mentally and physically, getting sick and not being able to recoup. I am don't know how well others deal with the flu, but when I am hit with it I am hit hard and can be dead to the world for over four days. At which point I would fall behind in a VERY busy schedule, have to work even harder with even less sleep, and so on, and so on. But, I think most of my concern was growing out of nervousness and the fear of the unknown as it is fading with the more I learn of what depot is all about. I am sure as long as a person is in good physical condition before getting to depot they would be able to survive it as well as so many others have. Cheers P.S. Here's a book for ya, ISBN: 0921642385
