oneday,
LOL Have you been accepted yet? I have not been to depot but have heard and can logically infer from the posts here. I think they run you/own you, so to speak, from 6am to 10pm every day but weekends. Even then some weekends too. When are you going to get to use the convenience of a cell phone? Also I am sure they have land line phones for you to use in Depot! It's not jail. Number two, if you are using it for the convenience of accepting calls from home I would give my left arm to be there at Depot when you are standing in drill or sitting in class and your cell goes off. I am pissing myself just thinking about it. Are you serious about the cell phone for Depot? I hope your post was just a joke. If not they are sure hiring cadets with loads of common sense and intelligence. WOW!

Onedaysoon, good question. As a person with a small child, I would recommend that a parent keep a cell phone on hand in case of emergencies, and other than that, I understand you have to wait in line quite a bit for the phone so it would really be useful since your free time is minimal. I have coverage through Bell Mobility but not sure how their long distance stacks up to other competitors. Good luck and have fun at depot.

Onedaysoon, When my husband went to Depot he took a cell. It stayed locked in his gun locker all day and only came out in the evenings and on weekends. We have 3 small kids and it meant alot to them to say goodnite to dad (almost) every nite. I would NOT advise using a roaming #, not thru Telus anyways. We did that for the first month and the bill was just over $300. Apparently, calls are routed through the nearest hub (Iwas told there are quite afew) which turns the call into a long distance one. Get yourself a Sask phone # with free evenings and weekends plan. If you have a family, have your wife do the same for your home phone..free evenings and weekends. You get up to 1000min a month on these plans. This worked great for us. My husband lived in C block and found the best cell reception to be in the closet where suitcases are stored. It also allowed him some privacy. There are pay phones but they like to limit the calls to no more than 20min (understandable as there are lots of people who use them)...and there is no privacy. Best of luck to you!!

Guest,
Do you not have anything better to do than make yourself out to be a complete a** h**e? If not, keep it up, you're doing a great job. You are a real piece of work. If you don't post another time on this message baord, it'll be too soon. This is meant for SUPPORT!! Not wise cracks by people like you who don't have anything else to do. I bet you got beat up alot in school. Am I right? Huh? Huh? Am I? ;D ;D
Take off, and don't bother us anymore.

Hi Onedaysoon,
A cell phone is a very good thing to have at depot... especially if you have a family. The payphones just end up being too expensive and as was said before they are not private.
The cheapest way to go is exactly what Mrs Jamaf said... We got a Sask number and I have been talking to Jas pretty much every night at about 8 his time or later if he is busy - just under 1000 minutes a month. Tons of cadets take a cell and it seems like all have reception problems, but you will find your "good areas" quickly.
Mrs. Jas
ps - hey Ryan, you must be in troop 14 - see you at grad!

EMSaddict, what province are you in? Sorry for the delay in answering. Maverick, I am applying from 'M' Division. Ryan, thank you for the finger crossing. Good and bad news, I heard the guy who I would be going in the place of has decided to go for it, or at least he said he is. The good news is that he won't be passing up on a chance of a lifetime, the bad news is I'll probably be waiting again until April/May unless another division can't fill all their spots. The bright side is that this extra time will allow me to prepare more (physical/money), although I would like to have been finishing in the July heat instead of having 2-3 months to go. Cheers!

Thanks..
So it seems that Ol Telus is the way to go. The eve weekends plan is exactly the way i was thinking as well as getting a Sask number. The friends and family can call me and deal with the LD charges and I wont have to worry about talk time.
As for guest, you'll get no rise from me.. ;D
All the best and if anyone else has cell suggestions then let me know as i will be getting it over the next couple days!

Oneday,
You are the typical wannabe cop cowboy. You will get to throw many people like me in jail will you? Is that why you want to be a cop? To exude your new found power over others. Lets hear it for the RCMP and their brilliant screening process. They better start widening the doors at Depot in preparation for your arrival. You are a true hero. You go puffing your chest and roughing up (much less throwing in jail) anyone who decides to take a verbal shot at you and I will see you at McDonalds serving me my fries. Keep up the good work and let us know here what McD's you are most likely to choose after your discharge.

why do people even attempt to get a rise out of others...So you're bitter that you didn't get accepted. Let it go. It's not the fault of anyone here. I got defered by the mounties, yeah it sucks but I'm not going to take out that frustration on anyone here, I'm going to do my best to continue to encourage them and hope that they can meet the goal that others are not able to attain. Like others have said this is a forum for support, so unless you have positive or intelligent comments I'm not going to bother responding in this thread.

Mrs Jas, Yes, I am in troop 14! And oneday....a cell phone is a great thing to have here. You WILL have to lock it in your gun locker during the day, but after 4:30pm on weekdays and on weekends, your time is your own, and the cell phone is nice. That being said, you won't have much time to talk, as we DO usually work from about 5:30am-11pm on weekdays, and a lot of us still put in 8+ hours of cadet related work on each weekend day...but there is always time for a call home! Cheers, and good luck with everything. RY
