Has anyone in here thought of trying out for a municipal police force while going through the RCMP application process? It would seem that being on a police force would greatly improve your chances for RCMP in the future. I mean I just started the RCMP app. process, so it could be 18 months before I get in...if I am successful on my first try. Living in southern Ontario, there are many different forces I could apply to in the mean time. Would they really care or ask if you're applying to RCMP also? It seems silly to me now -that I would pass up the oppourtunity to make 2-3x more money and get far more experience than I do now (in my security job). Has anyone else considered this?

The funny thing is that I actually went out and did this. I started my RCMP application process back in February 2003 and began playing the waiting game. By July I finally got my application package and I knew there was going to be another painful wait period before the envelope gets cracked open by RCMP, so I applied to a well-respected Municipal agency in Late July. Before I knew it, I had gone through 80% of the selection process by the end of august my the Municipal agency. I was told that my chances of getting into the muni are great and it was made very clear to me that if I had any intentions of choosing RCMP at this point, my application would be thrown out. I did a bit of research and realized that the muni has great benefits. The starting pay is about $10000 higher, there is a great nieche for me to advance in a smaller agency, and I compared the way I have been treated by both agencies. The muni is more homey and I actually feel like an individual. I'm only 22 and have my university education plus lots of other things. If I get into this agency before RCMP, I would definitely jump at the chance. If down the road I want to move to somewhere else, I may go for the RCMP again and even jump a few ranks doing it...THe last time I checked with RCMP recruiting, they hadn't gotten too far with my application and couldn't give me a straight answer. the bureaucracy I'm observing in the RCMP worries me. I now have second thoughts about wanting to work for such a huge agency in one of the lowest ranks. I just kinda feel like an ant and somewhat disposable. Anyways, it seems like on small move may have completely changed the course of my future career and life. But it all seems right...

One thing to be careful of is using a muni force as a stepping stone. MOST WILL NOT find this acceptable. If there is even a hint of you only staying for a few years and then jumping ship they will say thanks but don't call us we'll call you....I'm not saying don't do it, but just think it through before making a decision...My opinion is stilll one agency at a time...

This is a tough call but I guess you have to think it through.Glad to see that the municipal would like to have you,but imagine,if you snatch up the seat, that mean someone else will be kick out.And because of the budget,if they spend a whole lot of money on you,for sure they hope that you will stay with them.
The best way is,figure out what you want first.A small environment where everybody know everybody,or a big agency like RCMP who offer you more opportunities. It's your judgement call and good luck.
Sorry if I sound a bit harsh or rude, but I am a strong believer that if you join a department, don't think it's your stepping stone,it's an honour that they would like to have you, appreciate that.

Well...that be that....my hole in my background was cleared up....and I got THE CALL. I will be heading to Regina in mid-Oct. I guess this will be my last post....after all this is an applicants forum. And once I get to depot, I don't think they will be offering the "secrets of recruiting" course. Nor do I think that as a member I will know much more about recruiting. It seems that only recruiting and the applicants know best as to what's going on. Besides I get all fired up when people post odd, misleading, negative, stupid, stereotypical..things. Don't get me wrong.....I love to hear all the odd, misleading, negative, stupid and stereotypical.......and sometimes respond to them. I found it a good way to learn about others opinions and views. I just don't think I'll have the time like I do now to make a sarcastic, yet educational response. Anyhoo.....my advice to all is to hang in (that's original). The process is slow...annoying...and sometimes frustrating. And we would all like to blame recruitng....however, from what I can tell they are working hard. The fact of the matter is that they need more resources (more money) to get their job done more efficiently. Which is also an issue in it self....does the RCMP put a few more million into recruiting, or does it put that few more million into more members for operational units. Anyways, I blame the federal government and the way they manage our money (or don't manage it). They should pump up the money they give to the rcmp. Ok....enough of the political speech. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I first applied to the RCMP over 8 years ago. I was deferred due to lack of life experience. I took this at the time as meaning I wasn't the type they wanted. However, after some maturity and more life experience I though...."hold on, I would make a great cop"....so I took my new attitude to the RCMP and here I am today. This time around, it was a 14 month timeline from RPAT to Depot. There are a lot of devoted, kind, and talented people on this forum (from what I gathered from the posts...maybe they are all lies and you are really a bunch of a**holes And you guys/gals will make it far. As for the negative and rude people...keep it up. It makes the rest of us feel better because we know which ones will be in the 80% or so applicants that don't make the cut. My two negatives about this forum: my picture in my profile doesn't show up (sometimes it will...but usually it is just the X ) Secondly, the dude that told me "see you in hell" a few pages back.....I guess I won't be seeing you Ok...that is the end of my editorial. Give me a personal message if your coming to depot or whatever. Goose

In ontario we do have more then one police force to apply . I started my process with RCMP in sep02 and the process continues(final medical). I am seriously thinking abouth OPP/municipal force now because the hiring process for RCMP seem to be a mess. Plus you have other advantages like paid training in OPP.

Right on, Goose, congratulations! Thanks for all the helpful info and comments you posted over the months. Good luck.
Just an aside, I've tried registering on this board twice now and it always says I've been successful, but then I never get an email and can't login. Just in case you're wondering why I'm still 'guested'.

Hi guys.
I've given my mandattory 14 pints of blood, sucked up enough x-rays to let me act as a nightlight in the event of a power failure, and undergone the dental exam from hell for the medical portion. It got me to wondering, what else they need to do for the medical exams?
I know there's a psych, and I think someone mentioned an EKG was on the list somewhere. Does anyone who's undergone the process have any insight?
Thanks. ;D
