Journey2CPS
Yeah, I am still here...just have to do the pare for Calgary. The only date I could get is on Nov 1, pretty have everything else ready. Just have update my CPR, but my work is paying for me to do a first aid course. I have the standard first aid, two day course. This one is a week long course, Occupational First Aid level 2. At least I don't have to write the test for Calgary again. I am heading to a CPS info session at the end of Oct here on the west coast. Got to see whats new and chat with the recruiters. My wife is hoping I get on, she would love to move to Calgary...so hopefully this time I can nail the interview down.... Will keep ya posted J

Any pointers on taking the PARE? I'm really nervous about the test. I'm scheduled to take Nov. 19/03. Currently in training in order get in tip-top shape for it. Heard it's a toughie.

Silver angel,
If you are even remotely in shape (ie jog and strength train on a semi regular basis) you will do fine. The PARE is a joke. The only trick is to pace yourself and not tire yourself out in the first two laps. If you pace yourself you will have plenty of time to complete it. Don't worry unless you love Doritos and Export A's!

So mean all the guys were trying to scare me off? All well, hopefully all this painful training will pay off for me in the end. Does anyone know if there is any oriental women on the CPS force? I've finally decided after many, many years to stop making excuses as to why I shouldn't or can't give CPS a go.

Journey2CPS,
I looked at your site, maybe something to consider re: some of your pre-study material... I know that it is located else where on the net.... but the less places that info is located the better for us on the street.... I'm sure you understand
Good luck

Slvrangl: The PARE is just like guest said. Nothing to worry about. I did it in 3:42 the first time I did it and that was with NO training at all.
Guest: I was confused as to what material you meant when I read your post, but I will remove what you were talking about. I hear your concerns.

I went to the UofC this weekend to check out the push/pull apparatus and the 100lbs/50ft carry. Holy man!!!!!! Does anyone have any tips on these? I could only push/pull 10-15 less than expected and the 100lb carry...I'm having great difficulty getting it up to carry at all. And the one time that I did, well I only went 25ft before it dropped. A little info on myself...I'm 5'3" and 120lbs. The people that I have seen doing this were bigger than I am. Any suggestions for small people? I know I probably have to get the form down, but haven't figured it out yet.

Slvrangl:
Hit the gym now. I am 5'4 120pounds too.I am not sure if I can do it now,but I am sure I will pass it! Just hit the gym, do a LOT of weight training to increase your upper body strength.
Don't get discourage by your size, I have met tons of female officer who happen to be caucasian but smaller and shorter than me.(slim as well) but I am sure they can do their job well. It's jus the strength that you have matter!
Good luck.

silvrangl:
Like YC said only training will help with that...it's unfortunate that the push/pull is designed for people at least 5'8" and taller. Anyone shorter than that has a lot more difficulty with it, but it is possible. I saw a woman when I ran for RCMP that was 5'1" and about 110lbs. She did good on the course and the pull aspect but she struggled with push. She did drop it once but she still got through and passed, so it is possible. I also strongly believe that the PARE is 30% physical and 70% Mental! Think positive and you will beat it.
Good Luck!
Another little tip, go and watch a PARE running before you do yours, you won't believe how much it will help, and when you run the PARE, just before you run make sure you suck on a Halls! It will completely kill that raw throat feeling afterwards!!

silvrangl Re: Push / Pull machine Keep in mind that the machine already has 15 Ibs, so you have to take that into account when you are loading it up with the weight plates. I agree with J2CPS, you have to go and watch a PARE. It really helps with calming your nerves. I think there might be one this Wednesday. I would check with UFC. If you are training at UFC, you can do six lapes on track and stairs. Your six push and pull on the machine as per standard. You will find that your heart rate comes pretty close to the level of the actual PARE. Jag

silvrangl: There is a PARE being run tomorrow in the Gold gym at UofC from 1100 - 1500. I will be there around 1030 to register for mine. The RCMP applicants go first, so depending on how many there are, I should be running mine around 1300 - 1400.
PM me if your planning on going to watch and we can maybe meet up at the gym.

Well I'm off to the PARE, hopefully I don't have to wait too long for these RCMP people to finish... ;D ;D I'll post my time this afternoon to update everyone. Back from the PARE. Did it in 3:26 which is a 20 sec improvement over the last time. So that means everything goes in to recruiting tommorrow afternoon!! Now the fun begins! ;D

journey2cps,
Congratulations on the PARE!!!
I think I'll go watch the testing next month as we are doing API (Annual Physical Inventory) at work. I hate doing it!! Oh well.
Yes, I've been training heavily on weights and doing interval training for cardio. I'll head to the U this weekend and practice on the push/pull aparatus and the 100lbs carry.
