For Bas, from the timeline thread...
This is info from a member at the Blueline forum:
KL Sage Member Member # 326
posted July 28, 2003 19:41 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Getting positions on specialized units depends on your location and demonstrated ability, among other things. I went into a plainclothes position at about three years service. It depends on your detachment. The position I had was designed to be a developmental one and I rotated out at the end of my tour. In the Lower Mainland it is possible to get to permanent plainclothes positions at about three years.
Promotion is a completely different animal. There is a somewhat complicated process in place for that. Promotion at seven years, which is when you first become eligible, is the exception. A realistic goal would be 10 to 15 years for your first promotion, depending on where you are willing to go and what you'll do.
I wouldn't get too worked up about specialized units and promotion just yet. If you get in, concentrate on becoming a good general duty member. It is the foundation for success in other areas.
"end quote"
Hope that answers your question Bas.

Boy, who is that character that keeps posting stuff about his corrupt father and how everyone in policing is corrupt??? I thought he said a while back that he withdrew his application (Longshot?)...or wasn't going to pass the interview due to his crapy college preformance. Anyways, if you think that an organization is corrupt, then why would you want to join it??? And if someone is sooooo negative about policing why do they keep on looking at the posts here.....there are web sites that are anti-police...try that. Oh, one more thing, most provinces have judicial rulings and court transcripts online.......since you have the time to surf the web...look up the cases where police officers are charged with stuff. It is almost always another police officer that took them in. Oh, and I agree with Storm that that "Bull" character is out to lunch...."mall security", I actually don't even think "bull" is a member, but possibly a disgruntled rejected applicant...maybe it is 'Longshot' My next post I won't be so modest and elegant Oh, Journey2depot....excellent last post, I know you didn't write it, but the info and comment on focusing on having good GD skills is..well, good.

I thought he said a while back that he withdrew his application (Longshot?)...or wasn't going to pass the interview due to his crapy college preformance. Anyways, if you think that an organization is corrupt, then why would you want to join it??? I never said my father was corrupt nor did I say the RCMP was corrupt. I was speaking generally about how everyone who gets into policing is going to run into the bottom 10% who shouldn't be in policing but are generally protected until they really screw-up. You're going to run into a few bullies with badges and you'll be embarrassed when working calls with them. They won't go so far over the line that you'll have to report them but you're going to feel very uncomfortable working around them seeing how they treat citizens like crap who don't deserve it. And yes, my application has been withdrawn but I intend to apply again when I finish my B.Sc. Next time you post avoid the character assassination and stop putting words in my mouth. Also, I didn't post as "Bull."

Thanks for the insight Longshot, as with any organizations there are good guys, bad guys and guys who are not interested in their jobs at all.
Good luck on your studies.

Longshot, I can accept your last post.....it is worded in a much more neutral way, but still gets the point across. AND I can agree with that too.
1 in 10 cops are more suited to bag groceries at Safeway.
I always find it interesting that the rcmp (and police in general) have one of the most stringent hiring practices of ANY career, yet a few idiots make it through the process. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses, judges, politicians, and the like don't go through hours of interviews and have their background investigated to death. Most of the above mentioned jobs you just need to make it into the university program and in a few years you can practice your profession....regardless of your background (not talking about criminal convictions, but all the other nasty things people do that the police would never hire you over)

I was riding home last night, bad traffic. I got home, pulled my cell out of my pocket, and I had voicemail... from the recruiter! I wasn't able to hear the ringer over the motorcycle engine! She's supposed to call back today to arrange an appointment time for the interview! Looks like things are finally moving along.

Holy crap, that was fast. I got my call back, looks like my interview is on August 11th! Just two weeks away. Now it's all starting to seem a lot more 'real'. I'm assuming this is the 'security' interview. Let me guess, I adopt a 'If they don't mention it, you don't mention it' mentality, right? So if they ask questions like 'have you ever stolen something', do I tell them about that time I was five years old and shoplifted some candy, or do they not really care?

Macguy9...what city is your interview being held? My security interview is a couple of days before yours (Aug 7) at the Langely RCMP detachment.

They gave me the option of going downtown, but as I live about 3 minutes away from Newton Detatchment... well, the choice was obvious. ;D

Hey..this is more like it....positive talk about the application process.....good luck macguy and reb.
And yes mac guy, full disclosure of asked questions...they will tell you to move on if you start giving too much detail about the times you took some candy or your mother's change when you were 5.
