The point is... is that there are a lot of different aspects to consider. Members in different areas don't have the same experience so opinions differ.
I for one know many members who have gone from "dogscratch, ca" to major sections. Just as Hert5 mentioned they had much more opportunity in the smaller communities. (average was min 25 files per night per member up to 40 - anything from the small stuff to the major stuff)
I have also worked with members straight from the city who didn't have anywhere near the same experience... they basically worked as "first responders". While on the other hand there have also been members from city who have done a lot....
It really is what you make of it... wherever you are.

Anyhow, this will be the last time i access this thread as there is alot of opinions but very few fact. Seems like a lot of regurgitated thoughts. As for 25-40 files per night per member. I would find that hard to believe.Dont bother to respond as I will not return. Good luck to all those in the running just dont listen to most of the BS in this thread.

Hello all, I want to thank you all for the support and advice you gave me. As you all know I never made it through the interview However I feel a deep sense of peace through all of this. I'm not giving up this easy, my interviewer was very positive and said not to give up and wants to see me again in the future It's just a matter of getting our bills straightened out a bit more, other than that he said that I'd make a perfect recruit, which is good. So tonight I made my first step in reaching my goal, I called a guy from my church who was looking for a good worker to go lobster fishing and he wants me to start in sept. I will make almost triple of what I'm making now, that sure will help in getting some bills paid off I'm also going to see if I can do some RCMP auxiliary work here on the island while I'm waiting to write again. My interviewer thought that I would have to wait for 2 years to apply again but I heard that they changed it to 1 year. Does anyone know the story on this? Well I better get to bed, it was a long day. Again thanks for everyone's support. Tim P.S. You can un-cross all those body parts for now, LOL....until next time that is...

Dragon......good attitude about your situation. Now none of us really know a person via their posts...however, a positive and optimistic attitude like yours after getting bad news is such a big plus in a persons personality.
If you have kept tabs on some people here, you will see that a bunch of us are on our second time around in the process. Sure the wait sucks, however, in 10 years when you are doing the career you've always wanted the 2 year def will seem like nothing.
I agree with Bull that there is a lot of assumptions and opinions on this thread.....but like anything you read, you only get partial answers...and sometimes those partial answers and opinions can help you form your own opinion. In the absents of recruiting telling us directly what's up, the opinions of those in the process are the next best thing. As for opinions on policing, you could probably ask serving members from all over Canada the same question and get dozens of different answers.
Ok, I'm done.

Bull guest, you have probably left already, but I have to finish our debate. On RFT (recruit field training) in a small 4 (wo)man detachment, there are more then 50 files per member a year. If you look at the stats from the Prov government, you will see that a place like Bella Coola or simialr town will generate about 200 or so files per member....not counting the supervisor as they generally do not have the same case load. And if you look at the types of files....the majority are not mall security calls. Sure in Surrey you many have 20-30 calls on a busy shift, but you write most of them off due to low priority, not a criminal issue, and don't investigate them to death....and if they need to be investigated to death, they usually end up in the GIS office. So small towns are excellent to work in (I assume) however, the feeling of a crazy night with robberies, chases, bar fights, and what not are available in the larger centers. So there are disadvantages and advantages to both. Ok, I am done on this topic. Yes, I realize that I can be a opinionated a-hole, but it is always fun to have a good debate. As I mentioned before, I come from and RCMP family.....however, as someone else mentioned before, this is only MY opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. On another note, I withdrew my application to the RCMP...for the time being, and I am going to move to Chile for a couple years to teach at a school. Tough decision, once in a life time opportunity....and it also means that when I apply again I can do the poly ;D Good luck to you all, it looks like there are some really good candidates here, and from what I have seen second hand, being a Mountie is all that it has been cracked up to be....as long as you like paper work, and the media printing half true stories about how you work. Bye

I think it would depend on your age and how long ago you downloaded regarding the mp3 download thing. Everyone knows that downloading pirated songs from the internet is illegal. Against the law. If you did this within say the last three to five years and did it knowingly as an adult I would venture to say you are probably screwed. Laws are laws no matter how miniscule you might feel they are. Haha, the officers at my dad's detachment used to pass around pirated games all the time. Nobody gives a shit, don't even mention it. Just don't be a distributor or make money off it.

Wow, we are being invaded by "guests"! Just kidding guys, it is great to be able to read posts from the ones that are "doing it" and are "in the know". That of course would now include Ace13 Dragon- I am sorry to hear about your interview. I admire your possitive attitude. Here is a quote from a great guy that encouraged me about a month ago - "a person can't just give up that easily in life or we would never reach our goals. What's life without troubles, we should try our best to learn from them and not get hung up on them. I believe that ALL things happen for a reason whether its good or bad at the time." - Tim ("Dragon" page 70) Thanks Tim, good luck in the future, one day you will make it. Don't give up !

Rexina, Great information you posted about the info session. Did they say when the depot training period is being increased to 26 weeks ? Thanks for clarifying the difference between Limited Duration Postings and Isolated Postings too.
Here is a question that I think has been asked before, but I don't think it was ever answered. I guess the guys and ladies that have gone through depot would be able to answer it the best, but any info would be great - How much does it really cost to get through depot ? $4000- $6000 seems really high to me. If we use the average of $5000, over 22 weeks, that is $227 per week. What is it that you are having to spend your money on ? At the info session that I went to they said you will need this money for your Friday night McDonald's visit but did not expand on any other costs. Are Big Macs really this expensive in Regina ? I am not concerned about not having the money, I am just trying to figure it out in my head. Can someone give us some insight ?
Impy- I ran my practice PARE at the YMCA in Vancouver. This is also where I am running the real thing on Sunday. I can't remember where you are from - but check out your local YMCA website or just give them a call. They charged around $35 for the practice. I think it is worth doing to get an idea of what it is all about.
Journey, Thanks for clearing up the Pare/application question. Great LDP story too !

I don't know if they figure this in, but I know I'll still be paying for rent and utilities while I'm in depot. Don't waste your money, PARE is bloody easy. If you can't get a sub-4:00 time with no practice then you're in really bad shape. I ran it with NO preparation after being a lay-about for the past several years and still got under 4:00. If I can do that then anybody can. Sure I was tired and had a sore chest aftewards, but if you can't gut through four minutes of exertion there's something wrong.

In regards to the MP3 question....I thought that was a joke or something. You guys are overthinking things a little aren't you? Nobody cares about the MP3 issue, if you were to mention it, you would just look foolish. You don't have to disclose things of that nature, as long as you weren't making a profit etc. I agree with previous posts about people thinking you have to be an angel to be a cop, that is rediculous......it's called life experience. No offense, but if you have to ask whether you should disclose MP3 use, you're probably not going to pass the interview.

A little side note, in today's Calgary Herald careers section, the Calgary Police Service has taken out a full page recruiting ad, saying they are tripling their hiring numbers for the next five years. There are also "WANTED: RECRUITS" recruiting posters all over city transit buses and trains. As well, they have a new Hummer H2 decked out in graphics and a custom license plate "HIRING" that they are taking to all career fairs.
Edmonton Police is also in town at a high tech career fair today and tomorrow.
Sound like they are really getting compeditive. Intersting to note, no standards have changed.
Also, regarding the RCMP, when I spoke with the recruiter when I started the process, he said right now no one is competing against anyone else. Basically, once you get a package, all you have to do is compete against yourself and their standards. Everyone who passes the minimum will get hired right now.
In Calgary, they are doing two medicals per day right now, according to the MD. That is 10 per week.
