Just re-read my last post and noticed all those lovely spelling errors....I swear it is my typing and not my vocab skills. If the RPAT score breakdown made sense, I could find out my vocab aptitude. ;D Further to this discussion, as a white male, I do think the RCMP is going the right direction with recruiting minorities. What would be your solution to the problem? What do you think they should do? I am of the impression that the lower qualification in RPAT score simply gets minorities in through door. However, the standard remain the same for PARE, educational requirements, background, and all depot examinations. If the above is the true, than what is the fuss about. Do minorities really take away that many positions. We could do our own survey. How many minorities were there when you wrote your RPAT? From a percentage point of view, I am sure that not all of them made the 3.2 cut-off. This whole issue makes it more difficult for minorities to thrive in the force. Simply because you go into the Depot or Detachment wondering if the visible minority officer or recruit (right next to you) is lessor of a Mountie at heart. However, from that Mountie's point of view, he goes in with the attitude that he has to work twice as hard to prove that he or she is worthy of the Serge. After all he would not want his fellow officer to judge him based on his score of RPAT. I say it is a double edge sword. Jag

Hey all,
Just a little bit of info that I picked up at a RCMP patrol briefing last night about Depot. The Sgt. said that he was recently at Depot to present a badge and was quite impressed with the drills. However, he said that Depot will be adding a lot more discipline and a lot less "hand holding". Sounds like they want to really toughen up the troops.

Jag, You are right, it is a double edge sword. My observations are this...at my RPAT there were about 10% minorities (male and female).....running the PARE there was one minority out of about 14 applicants. AND finally, having been to Depot to see a grad, the troop seemed to have about 20-15% minority make-up. So, I don't think that minorities are sucking up all the positions.
If all other stages are equal in the hiring and training process like you said, then we could probably assume that those Mounties getting their badge have all obtained a specific standard. The question that I wonder about is the validity of the RPAT. I mean validity in the scientific method, does the RPAT measure what it is intended to measure, apptitude for a career in policing. I think the RPAT definitely determines if you have some basic skills required for policing, but does a higher score mean you will be a better police officer. How is the passing score of 3.2 determined? Having been to university, their are some honour roll students that I know that I would never want to see behind a uniform. They may have the high GPA, but lack other common sense that is a must in policing.
Further to all this is that fact that, in BC at least, they have been sending out application packages to white males that have scored in the 3.4 range. So with this, I believe the whole issue of RPAT scores is moot...at least for now.

Thank you Cab for making an excellent point to our special "Guest" friend.
Guest,
So you think the RCMP uses discrimination eh? Well, so what do you think about the Inuit troop that was supposed to be coming to Depot? Did you know that they don't have a high school education? Do you think that they should not be allowed to police their own community because of this? In the end, it comes down to whose most qualified to do the job.
Can you answer my questions and get back to me? Thanks i'd appreciate it.

Dragon and Jag, Thanks guys, I completely agree with you Dragon,Everything happens for a reason.Sometimes we don't understand it at the time, but down the road it always seems to make sense.
Ace13, I had my eyes done at Valley Laser Eye Center in Abbotsford. I believe you are in Surrey now aren't you ?Not too far away. They were extremely professional and yet friendly enough to really set your mind at ease. I was nervous going in, but I think it is scarier to think about it than to do it. It is too bad to hear that YC did not have such as succesful surgery. There is no guarantee that your vision will be perfect after the surgery, but the chances for most people are very good. I talked to a number of people that either had the surgery done or knew someone well that had it done and I did not hear anyone say anything negative about their experiences. As far as hong long it took for my vision to be normal,I had my surgery at 2:00 Thursday, and I could see perfectly clearly the next morning. I was surprised at how quickly I recovered. For the first couple of days, my eye felt a bit tired and it was good to keep them closed as much as I could, but I really didn't have much pain. It is nice to be able to see without having to wear contacts or glasses. If you are thinking of having it done, I say go for it.

Look at J2D's timeline...that might help. It may take longer though. I remember him mentioning that they were even bringing in retired members to help clear the backlog

Took me a few months, but I finally registered on this forum....too many computer probs with registering. However, Cab the guest is now Cab the....not guest.
Anyways, I think J2D is from Alberta so his timeline is in Alberta time. From my experience in BC "E" division, I submitted my application package in Nov 2002 and got the call for the interview March 2003.

Jas, Do they contact all your references? When you are talking about references are you talking about the "Friends and Associates" form or the "Character reference" form? Jag

Hi Jag,
Sorry I thought you were e-div.
According to the investigator they are going to speak to "Everyone".....lol
The RCMP have so far spoken to all (3)Character References, 3 of 5 Associate References and have spoken to all my past supervisors. Plus they paid a visit to all my past and present neighbors.
Hopefully I will get a date soon.
