I did my interview in January, so I thought i'd give you guys a little timeline you could probably expect. To start, they don't automatically start your background once you did your interview, unless you did your security interview as well as your suitability on the same day. I did my interview in January, then I got my medical package 2 months to the day later, then I start my background a couple weeks after that and it only took around 3-4 weeks. I just finished my medical today, so i'm just waiting for the call. Hope that clears some things up for you guys, don't worry, once you've done the interview things will speed up. www.geocities.com/rcmpcadet2003Joseph

Tim, I did both my suitability and security interviews approx two weeks after handing in my package. I was surprised how quick they had responded. I handed in my package on a Monday and they contacted me the next week on Thursday to do the interview. I had 5 days notice. I was more stressed on the days leading up to the interview. I wasn't too stressed the day of. My interviewer made me feel really comfortable and put my mind at ease. Some of the questions are tough but you have a lot of time to think of and organize your answers. The questions are not too much different than questions you would find on LE interview prep guides, including J2D's sample questions. There is a lot of them though and the interview is long, the key is not to panick when you are stuck on an answer, stay calm and you should be able to work your way through it.

Hey Joseph. Small world! I'm a Civilian Member of the RCMP working in Ottawa. I also worked the Sunset Ceremonies last year. In fact in the first picture on your website I was standing behind the flagpole on the hill. I was in period uniform doing crowd control. I will be working this year's cermonies in May. Will you be there again? Good luck with the rest of the process. You should be off to Depot in no time.

WOW! I lost internet when I switched hotels. Ace13 and I are moved in to our apt. We both enjoy our work very much. My detachment is not as busy as hers, but course wise there is a lot more at my detachment. In my first three weeks I completed Taser(ZZZZZZZZZZAP!) and ASD(approved screening device) training. Other courses are in the offing. Ace is right in that the day you get your badge is a never forget day. So is the first traffic stop, arrest and all of those other things. I don't think I have every enjoyed anything so much. It really is the greatest job in the world!
I like it here in BC the weather is not bad. So how are the guys at Depot? I have been out of the loop, SHeldon, JAmaf, Marco and all you guys?
I seen the Atlantic Trap and Gill on Davie and plan a run down threre once I get more settled. I went throught the posts to bring myself up to speed and see how everyything is moving, Congrats to all of you who have got your interveiw dates. The advice I read on the interview process from Cab is pretty well dead on. The only piece of advice I would add would be to look at situations in your life that allowed you to use the 7 competencies listed. It can help prepare you a little more.
I am glad to be able to be back online and see whats new. I look forward to hearing from the folks at Depot and know how things are going, you guys have my email to so drop me a line and let me know your postings.
Later, Storm

Hello, Hello All.. I'll just let you all know a little bit about me. I'm from Calgary, AB and I will be writting my RPAT in June to start this whole process. But I will be going to Depot before I even write my RPAT. "How?" you ask.. well I will be a RCMP 'K' Division Summer Student with Cochrane Detachment. As a sworn Special Constable with the RCMP I will be assigned to a watch and work 40 hours a week with the Regular Members in an operational capacity. So I leave for my brief summer student training on May 24th. Hopefully this will give me some more good experience to draw from for the interview stage of the process. (Given I get to that stage while I am still young enough to remember ) Alright, I'll put a sock in it for now.

I posted this message else where and warrior Dave thought that your own dr did the test. Just getting things straight before I get to that stage of the race..... ;D Take care and hope you make it to depot real soooooooon...... Tim

Question about HousingI've been hearing conflicting reports regarding housing and the RCMP. Does the RCMP provide housing? If so is it your standard gov housing (ala Canadian Military), or do they purchase a block of condo's. One ex-member I talked to said that she always had housing paid for, and when she was posted in Kananaskis they all lived on the same block, and all had condo's backing onto the golf course...I've also heard that only some detachments have housing available, and I know members that all live in houses they have purchased...SO WHAT"S THE RIGHT ANSWER! Any help would be good, don't really want to have to harrass my recruiter about this...

To answer your questions regarding housing. The RCMP do have some force housing in certain postings. Most of the force housing is at limited duration or isolated postings. For example, I live in the lower mainland, BC ... and I guarentee, there is no force housing here! I do know that members often rent basement suites to other members for reduced prices. That's not a force thing, just a member's choice. Regarding medical files, the RCMP doctor usually creates his/her own medical file for you and do not get your previous medical files from another doctor. The only situation that I am familiar with is when you have a pre-existing condition, such as asthma or if you see a specialist for any reason, the RCMP medical staff may require a specialist's or doctor's report on your condition. Your own doctor would give you clearance at the beginning of the process, like make sure you are medically fit to run the PARE. That's the way my process was completed. Although, this is the RCMP and it may vary throughout divisions. Hope this helps, Ace13 p.s. RBJ2003, good luck as a special constable training with RCMP. I had a few members in my troop that were summer students before becoming constables, as well, I know many people who did that program and later became constables. That will definitely help with your recruitment process!

Ace, Good to hear. Due to the long length of the application process I have my info session May 14 hopefully I can write the RPAT in the beginning of June. That way I at least get the ball rolling. The only portion of the process that gives me some stress even thinking about it is the Interview stage.. Also, I found it very interesting to read through this topic. From your first message inquiring about the RCMP, to you becoming a Constable this past March. Very good reading. RJB

A bit further on RCMP housing. I became a member in February and I'm posted to a small town in Northern BC. Up here the Force housing is really good, most members live within a block or two of the detachment. My house is only two years old.
The reason that the RCMP offers force housing is that there is generally a complete lack of suitable rental accommodation and or a really weak real estate market. What that means: Force Housing = tiny community with next to no services.
Keep in mind that Force housing comes unfurnished with no appliances. It's a bit tough right out of Depot to have to buy furniture and appliances for a whole house (if you're used to apartment living).
The best part about Force housing is the rent. Picture about $200/mo for a single member utilities included (be prepared for a roommate). If you're bringing wife/girlfriend/kids/etc rent is more like 500-700/mo and you pay utilities (but you get the whole house). I think that this depends on the detachment and may change a bit over the next few years.
For all those RCMP applicants out there considering an LDP think hard. It can be really good experience for your career but there's a reason why a place is categorized 'limited duration'.
Good luck to everybody there's no job in the world like this.
