My question is regarding the "in-house" interview/visit that the department I am testing for does. I own a 9mm and use it for target shooting. I was wondering what the best way (in the eyes of a police department) to safe guard the weapon? I have a trigger lock on it now. Would it be best to lock the weapon in a safe? Also, if asked whether or not I would use the weapon for home security, what would be the best answer? I am going to answer honestly, but also want to be prepared. Thanks to all who reply.

Best to have both a trigger lock and a safe or lockable cabinet. As far as in home security. I would use deadly force if I felt that the lives of my family or myself were in eminent danger. Good Luck KUP

Just a little more input. I believe it reflects whether or not you have it in you to use deadly force. Regardless or where you are faced with this decision. On the street or in your own home making a decision to use deadly force is the same....

Long time-no post on this site-holidays have kept me busy!!!What dept. are you applying for? Usually if they visit you hear in CA its to basically "get a fell for what type of environment/community you are a part of"(i.e. if it is a "rough neighborhood",are you like your neighbors???!!).As you are a civilian, the "visiting" dept. cannot dictate what you do with your property, unless it presents a safety hazard to family or the general public. Most state abide BATF and sell trigger locks/or similar locking devices.as long as you have it in a safe location, trigger lock in place, and out of access from children/ visitors/irresponsible family members-that should suffice as the minimum. As Drakor said , a gun safe is ideal(what if you go on a long vacation and the gun is accessible?) but don't get nervous and buy some "wazoo" armored bank vault.Gun safety is important but that Dept. will teach you that in the academy when you get hired.(and they'll hold you accountable for weapons at that time too) Have your home tidy ,be neatly dressed on the day of the visit and treat the visit cordially(don't "suck up") and professionally and you'll do fine... P.S. its your second amendment right and plenty of people have firearms prior to joining an agency-don't feel that you have to justify owning it....
