Most of my life I really never knew what I wanted to do as far as career goes.
I spent my teen years in an organization called Civil Air Patrol.A total of five years in an auxilary of the Airforce. When I left to go into the Airforce I was a Cadet Major. Imagine if you will going from a Major to a Airman First Class. What a big adjustment but as you can tell I always like uniforms. When they told me I had my pick of careers I chose Law Enforcement. Funny thing is my father was a 18 wheel truck driver and absolutely could not stand cops. He made that very clear everytime he left docks and saw the chicken coop sitting there waiting on him.
Anyway I spent the next three years walking around big airplanes and on occasion I'd assist in breaking up fights at the NCO club. Of course it was always the other military 8)police flights. My friends and comrads so we never really made any arrrests. Once I pull over the base commander for DWI and I was quickly introduced the politics of law enforcement.
I got out for lack of any good reason if I hadn't I'd have 6 years left to retire. I'm kicking myself everyday. But destiny has a way of rearing it's head. I would have never met my wife and my 5 month old son would have been a dream. So I'm very thankful things worked out the way they have. So as soon as I got out I looked at all the local PDs. I naturally applied to the marine of PDs-the Maryland State Police-again I was re-introduced to politics and told point blank because of my race I'd have a hard time getting on. Also a little thing called Desert Storm was happening so everything locked up tighter then a drum. So I jobbed it for about three years.
After some convincing from a friend I went to work for the Department of Corrections. I figured this would make a good stepping stone into law enforcement. :-XSince most PDs had this great recruiting tool called COPS budgets were being blown because people were getting hired and trained to find out that being a cop is very boring. What they saw on TV wasn't happening every minute of the day. So these people quit.
I knew from the start that being in a prison 8 hours of the day wasn't for me. So I applied to the Maryland Transportation Authority, get this, I was told to give my two weeks notice because I was going to the Academy. Three days prior to the academy starting I get this call telling me that they sold my position in the academy and I was placed on the eligibilty list. Shortly after I left Corrections...It's was eight years...I finally apply to the local sheriffs department. I get hired and placed in the detention center with the promise I was going to the next academy for law enforcement. ???Three days go by I was then told there wasn't going to be a academy for three to five years. I was promise in good fate the next academy was going to be in 6 months. Needless to say I didn't want corrections so I shook their hands and left.
That was two years ago. Reluctantly I was talked into applying to the city police department by my brother. I was told today after my BI checks my jackets with Corrections and the sheriffs department I will be going to the Academy in November. Everyone pray for me I may actually make it this time...Its been 11 years since I left the Airforce. So my motto is if its worth having then it's worth fighting for. I may be the oldest cadet in the academy thank God they changed the age limit.
Thats my story.....Thanks for listen to an older young man rant and rave for a bit.
