SInce the board has been quiet...and my hunt for a LE position has been quiet, I thought I would send this message out: The background check has to be the hardest part of the whole hiring process!!!!! Reasons: It takes soooo long and you don't know what is going on until you get the notice... and then if you fail, you will never know why! GRRR! So everone, that is where I am right now... waiting.. and waiting and waiting some more. So who agrees with me? Porl

Hey Porl, My backgrounds should be starting soon if they have not already. I finished doing all that is required of me for the application process now I have to just sit and wait.

Hi Romano & Porl
Hang in there - I'm in the same boat as you Porl. My BI just started this week, and I'm hoping everyone is checking there messages & returning calls. Best of luck. What dept are you going for? Romano, I must have just missed you online. I'll email you with my news.

Romano and Dave, you two have a looooong road ahead if your BI is just now getting under way. I expect the average time for a background is 2 months and that might be a little conservative. And the wait, its a killer! But the longer you wait the better the chances of getting cleared.
Dave, I am applying with the local Sheriffs Dept here in the Northwest. Academy starts first Tuesday of January so they are trying to push us through. And actually funny thing happened yesterday, I posted the first note in this thread and then about an hour later, I receive a phone call stating that my BI looks good so far and they scheduled me for my Psych Interview for Dec 9th. So I know that my BI will be done before that! ;D
Good Luck to you two and everyone out there waiting and waiting to hear the news: You passed!

Actually Porl the Police service that Dave and I are applying for works a little differently than yours. Our BI is one of the last steps after the poly and psych. It only take a few weeks depending on how quickly your recruiter gets a hold of your references. I don't envy those who have to wait a really long time like a few months to hear anything. Best case scenario for Dave and myself is that we should know if we have a job or not before Christmas. Good luck to you Porl.

Just on the front end of my BI in Memphis. Female...what exactly are they looking for? Are they hunting fervently for disqualifiers, and if so, what are they, besides criminal? Served as a Marine a few years ago, and just finished my BA in Communications. Speak some Spanish...basically, I want this job!!! Please advise!

Hey guys, I feel all of your pain. I just finished my personal and phone interviews a couple weeks ago. My background check is supposed to be going on right now, and the recruiter said that calls will most likely be made by the middle of this week. However, I have contacted a couple of the references I listed in my personal history statement and none have recieved calls. Formal job offers are to take place on Jan. 7 and we still have to go through polys and psych yet as well as one hiring panel and the chief. What do you think is going on? When do I think about calling them to see if they need more information from me? Or should I just wait it out and see what happens? What do you all think?

Thats odd. I couldn't imagine that mine will take that long because when I took the test, they said that depending on my test scores, i would be scheduled for the physical agility test in January, then I would be processed from then on. But the academy that they are shooting me for is in March. So if I have to take the physical agility test, and then complete all my physhological tests and whatnot, then I couldn't imagine that the background test take that long. Unless they wait until the last minute until they know who exactly will be in the academy. Which I cannot imagine them doing. Perhaps they assume you will do well on the physical agility test, and they go ahead and start the background investigation upon passing of the written exam? Anyone else know?

Nothing is writen in stone and you better figure six months to a year just to finish the process. Im not say that it won't take less time it just depends on the number of applicants and the positions available. BI's really don't take long but when your investigator has yours and 25 others then it may take awhile. Factors that hold you up..... incomplete information about pass employers( addresses are the key). These things will get your application place on the bottom of the pile. It has been said here many times that most people don't get hired the first time thru so it may take you more then once. I strongly recomend you copy your application for future reference. This way you don't have any conflicting information and it will be easier to refer to in the event you apply to another department after you get hired. ( I knew a guy that applied to a new department, had some conflicting information and was fired). Best thing to do is have all your information together, get yourself into some sort of shape( so you'll be able to perform without having a heart attack) and plan, plan, plan. Do the things that will make you a better canidate and better then the guy down the street.

Whaoooo! I passed my BI. ;D I am just proof that you can't second guess your past. If you want to be a LEO then apply. And disclosed everything. Yeah, I had some skeletons in the closet. They were re-hashed and the BI passed me. SO just go for it.
I took my Psych today and its off to the Academy on Jan 2nd... That is coming up fast. Good luck to all!
