Any ideas how one can have a better Command Presence. Any activities that can bring out the more aggressive side of oneself? My Sgt said I really need to work on this, especially since I am female.
Any ideas welcome.
Thanks.

Hi there Porl, I've been an Army Officer in Canada for about 5 yrs and have been recently selected for RCMP. I hope I possess a little bit of command presence, or at least can offer an opinion or two on it.
By my definition, command presence is the image or perception of authority and confidence that one exudes. It is, in many ways, not something that is easily attained---some are blessed with it and others are not. Some military officers have strengths in many areas but when it comes to their image or command presence, they are lacking big time. Tough to get your point across to your subordinates and have them follow you in that situation because they are just not 'feeling the presence.'
You generally can't do much about your physical image other than the obvious--work out hard and slowly develop your body so that you are seen as fit, healthy, strong, and not to be messed with. BUT, you can look confident (good straight posture helps) at all times, and your body position should never be in a subordinate stance when you're trying to be in charge.
Let not overlook one of the best ways to demonstrate to others that you know what you're doing and what you're talking about. ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND TALKING ABOUT! Never stop learning, re-freshing, keeping abreast of all policing issues so that you always know how to respond, act, and counter those that may challenge you verbally or physically.
PERCEPTION IS REALITY Porl. If others think you are 'all that' by the image or perception you're giving off, then that's what they'll believe. And that's the goal right? I hoped I've helped a little.

Great posts, I just wanted to add something to this discussion. I personally believe the term "command" should be dropped. What you're looking for is presence. Self confidence and the image that you are both resonable, but will do what needs to be done. The whole idea of "command" or leadership often leads people to try and dictate or boss others around. The reality is that most people will follow someone with a strong presence, without that person having to force leadership. Also a strong presence, pysically but more importantly mentally can solve a lot of problems before they even occur. If the people that you're dealing with know that you will carry through with what has to be done, if someone crosses the line, they often won't bother. This really has more to do with your mental ability than physical.
