I would like any information or ideas: In 1993 I was charged with a petty offence of disorderly conduct which is defined under colorado state law as "loud and abusive language in a public place", However, because the argument was with my spouse, the charge was enhanced with domestic violence. At the time I was not in a financial position to fight the charge so I paid the fine completed the classes and went on with life. Now ten years later I begin to pusue my dream of becoming a police officer only to dicover that I have lost my gun rights thank to a federal law commonly refered to as the Lautenburg act in 1997 making it illegal for any one charged with the misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to possess a firearm. Have I lost my right to pusue my dream of becoming a police officer for yelling at my wife in a restaraunt??? Is this a violation of my constitutional right under the second ammendment???Is this law Ex-Post Facto??? Even some felonys after ten years are eligble to have their cival rights restored, where is the justice in that? Anybody with any advise or opinion?? I apreciate any time or comments given.

WHEEIZ I hate to be the one to tell you this but that law is Ex-post facto. I know their was a story a while back about a handfull of cops in colorado that had to start riding the desks because of that law being past. No it is not a violation of your rights under the second amendment, that said I think that law is a complete and total crock of sh*t. I don't know what femminist group got that passed, or how they did it.
As far as if your dreams are shot of being a police officer, I would say it doesn't look good. Ask around your local departments. I am sure they can tell your exactly how they feel about the issue.
Again sorry to be the one to tell you this, but it is better to know then to just wonder.

I would definitely say what t.cote said and ask your local law enforcement agencies. I know at the one I'm applying at, they told us straight out that anyone charged with domestic violence will not get far in the process. But everyone agency is different, so i would definitely ask around. Good luck!

If the departments you contact would deny you based on the misdemeanor plea, you could look into having your record cleared. It's been known to happen before.
Maybe it offers some hope.
