Hi ! My fiance is in Troop 24 - graduating May 16/05 ! We live in Ontario and have an apartment to give notice on ... but we don't have our detachment yet (in BC) and don't know how easy/quick we will find an apartment / house. Should we be giving our 60 days notice today or wait another month (yeah I know - last minute - but I just found this site !!) Also, does RCMP decide when to pack and move your belongings or can you make that decision yourself ? I'd love to hear from anyone who's been through this !

The RCMP usually put you up in a hotel/motel at your posting for 1 month (I think) but extentions are available if you are still not able to find a place to live.
Usually, you need to report to work within a few days to a week after graduation. RCMP will pay for a plane ticket back to hometown for a couple days to pack and then provide a plane ticket to the posting.
All situations are different though and if it's not possible for the family to move immediately, other plans might be available. Your fiance will have an opportunity to discuss this with relocation at depot and plans will be made from there.
If the posting is in the lower mainland of BC - there will be no problem finding a place to rent - it's just expensive.
Its been about 2 years since I've been in that situation, but I'd say the process has stayed somewhat the same.
Good luck

Yes they will pay for your move out to BC. I suppose you should give your notice, you have to give 60 days?? Wow that's a long time. What is your fiance's name, I was in 24 until I blew it on the pare. Where abouts are you going in BC. I'm on the Lower Mainland but originally from the Island if you have any questions.

Wow, congrats. My husband was also posted to BC in 2003 and here is my 2 cents. Give your notice, because if he graduates May 16th, he'll be going to work within 2 weeks after that....(you only go home to collect your stuff, if you even need to ). Although your his girlfriend, the RCMP may NOT pay for you at all to re-locate, only him. I know this because I was with my husband, who was my boyfriend on 5 years at the time and because we did not share the same address for a certain period of time, they paid only for him...so, I moved my stuff to his place and they moved it for him....and we drove my car (they paid for his to be shipped) across Canada to beautiful BC....however, I wouldn't recommend this in the winter (we left in November) but hey, it was an adventure. But, if you guys both share the same address and are considered common law, the kudos to you! Then, we got here and lived in a hotel for 28 days, they wouldn't pay for anything longer after 32 without good reason, so we found a place to rent for 2 months and then we bought and were into our home by Febuary. From our own personal expereince, coming from Oakville and re-locating, the RCMP gives those who re-locate out of province 2 years to buy, meaning in that 2 years, they will pay for lawyers fee's, land transfer tax and move the stuff they already moved for you, free of charge. So, we decided to buy right away rather than rent and that way they'd pick up the tab. We now live in Surrey and a ton of people when we moved critized us "Surrey, are you guys nuts!!!' HOWEVER, when you come from the GTA or T.O., there is nothing worse. It is actually affordable considering this entire province is was over priced and works well for us since we both work with 10 km of our house!!! Good luck, you'll be fine, it is such an adventure and you'll never want to leave once you get here! you can pm me at jpakd@hotmail.com cheers!
