I keep seeing threads on Background Investigations and it kinda has me wondering a bit. Reading some of them has made me a bit nostalgic ... that was until certain things that I had forgotten sort of popped up. EW YUCK!! I've had few run-ins with the law, a couple of speeding tickets, riding a motorcycle without a helmet? I did some weed in highschool (17 years ago) and I got a 24 hour about 13 years ago. Then there's my intermediate family. My dad has had numerous DUI's, both brothers are recovering addicts, and my husband has had 2 assualt charges. One was a squabble with me. Just a grabbing of the arm, but we all know how that goes down. A lot of marriage counselling happened after that, and it has made our marriage stronger than it ever has been and happier. In the past 3 years I've really turned my life around by becoming very involved in my church, establishing and running an ASD support group in town, I've got my B. ED and have taken many leadership courses, I really want to apply but am concerned that some of this stuff would disqualify me. Is it possible to call a recruiter and talk to them about it to get a yes or a no on it? Thanks

Unfortunately, there is no clear cut answer on this stuff. You can call your local recruiter, but 90% of the time they say they don't know for sure and that you should just apply. I wish I could be more help but I've heard of people with worse histories being accepted, and then I know people with less bad stuff that were defered. Wish I could be more help. BTW, go to 10-62.com if you want a site with a little more action/info specifically towards the RCMP.

Thanks for the reply... I've gone to 10-62 and tried to register and haven't had a response or e-mail yet. I'm waiting though. As for the background stuff ... once I've made a decision to do something I do it, followed through 100%. I think after the info session on Thursday I'll decide. It's just that I know that I won't have family support on this one. That's going to be difficult. I want to do everything I can without saying much right now. I don't really care what they think, I'll make my own decision and for the time being I'll keep it quiet.

Yeah, we're a little backed up on the approvals for membership right now. We do it manually so we can try and eliminate trouble makers (aka Trolls).

Everybody makes mistakes, I believe recruiters take into consideration the seriousness of the mistakes and the timeframe of when they occurred.
If you get a speeding ticket while in the process, that's definately not good.
There is a good article in the march issue of "blueline" magazine, about recuiters stand on backgrounds of applicants. If possible, try to get a copy to read. Most PD's have copies of "blueline."
Otherwise, you are never going to know the answer unless you apply. You really have nothing to lose. In that blueline article, they stress upon the fact that if people get deferred and advised to improve upon some aspect, they should apply again because most recruiters will not waste your time. So if they tell you to apply again in 1 year, apply again! If you are not suitable, they will tell you.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out Blueline. As for applying and I'm going to do it anyway, if I'm deferred I'll try again and if they say sorry, well hell whatever, I tried right??
