Well I got a few questions about the RCMP that I think maybe a few of you could help me out with. Currently I’m an RCMP volunteer I’m 20yrs of age in E division. Well last night I was doing some volunteering when one of my partners asked me if I wanted to go into the auxiliary program with him, so we can do it together rather then all alone. I'm actually really for it but I have heard many bad things about doing the auxiliary constable program. Such as
1. it’s harder to get hired as a full time member later on b/c you already have had some form of training?
2. There must be at least a 2yr commitment?
3. Do you have the power to arrest?
If any one out there has input for me please by all means let me know as our recruiting office really didn’t tell me much, the main question for me is well it lessen my chances of becoming a member? I would think it only enhances them but heard many mixed answers to this, so maybe some one can put it to rest for me, thanks to all and any input would be great, good day

1. it’s harder to get hired as a full time member later on b/c you already have had some form of training? Who told you that? It won't make it any harder to get hired, but don't expect it to make it easier either. Aux will give you some great experiences to use for your interview when you apply, and as long as you don't continualy piss off the RM's you go out with, you may be able to get some good references too. 2. There must be at least a 2yr commitment? Don't think so. The RCMP prefers to have Aux stick around for a long time since it costs a lot to train them, but they are not going to say you can't go to depot because you've only been an Aux for 12 months! 3. Do you have the power to arrest? Only when on duty and in the presence of a RM.

More than likely they will ask if you are or plan to be an applicant as they will not want to waste the time/money/training on you if you are going to be leaving soon.

I would definately apply to become an Auxiliary member. It can only help you. As Journey2depot mentioned, the experience and contacts you gain will only help you in the process to be a regular member especially for the interview stage. I actually applied myself but because I had received my information package...they did not want to train me and lose me shortly afterwards. I was under the impression though that if I had not written the test or even if I had just not got the information package yet, they would have considered me for the program. Good luck. Lance PS. I have a webpage up detailing my journey through the process with the RCMP and Halifax Regional Police. You can check it out at www.geocities.com/mountie2be/index.html

You will find two camps on the Aux program... one is that it is a great for way community minded people to get involved in policing... another is that it is a way for wannabees to try get into the RCMP because they can't make the RM selection process...
Generally speaking though, A/Csts are well respected and accepted. It would only hurt your chances of getting in if you are a weenie - because everyone in the detachment would then know it, and you'd never get in. If you are a solid addition to the team, of course it would help.
As for the arrest thing... anyone can arrest people - you do not need to be a peace officer. However, getting someone to comply with a citizen's arrest is another matter. An A/Cst is only a peace/police officer when working under the authority of a regular member. So, no dressing up and setting up your own checkstops at the end of your block...
For time committment... they want to see at least 150 hours a year on shift... so a shift or two a month minimum. It is a bit of investment to outfit and train an A/Cst, so if you are planning on going away to school or something in the next year, they'd probably tell you to try again when you get back.
As for my detachment, 1/2 of our A/Csts are pretty handy and dedicated, the other 1/2 I half I hardly ever see except for Rememberance day because they want to march with everyone...
You decide which you will be... others WILL notice.

"An A/Cst is only a peace/police officer when working under the authority of a regular member. So, no dressing up and setting up your own checkstops at the end of your block..." We actually had an Aux do that... He decided that while on his long drive to work everyday he should dress up in his uniform and pull anyone over that deserved it! Ofcourse he is no longer an Auxiliary Cst.
