PLEASE ACCEPT MY APOLOGIES ON MY MESSAGE. I DID NOT MEAN TO OFFEND ANYONE.MY REMARKS WERE UNCALLED FOR. ALL I MEANT WAS THAT CONSIDERING THE HISTORY OF POLICE FORCE DISCRIMINATION TOWARD GAY OFFICERS IN THE PAST I QUESTION THE FAIRNESS OF THE SELECTION PROCESS OF GAY APPLICANTS TODAY. THE FACT REMAINS THAT SEXUAL ORIENTATION IS A PART OF AN APPLICANTS BACKGROUND CHECK AND THE MEMBERS KNOW IT. IF AN APPLICANT DOES NOT FEEL SECURE IN DISCLOSING THIS ASPECT OF THEMSELVES WILL IT BE USED AGANIST THEM WITHOUT THEIR KNOWING IT? WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM IF THEY COME OUT LATER ON IN THEIR CAREERS? IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE RCMP DID NOT LIFT THE BAN ON GAY APPLICANTS INTIL THE LATE 1980S AND EVEN THEN THE FOUGHT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ON IT. THEY WERE ORDERD TO DO IT. THEY DID NOT DO IT OUT OF THE GOODNESS OF THEIR OWN HEART. IT WAS ONLY WHEN CONST. JIM STYLES HAD THE COURAGE TO STAND UP AND FIGHT BACK DID THE PROCESS OF LIFTING THE BAN COMMENCE. MANY OFFICERS WERE LOSING THEIR CAREERS PRIOR TO THAT FOR ADMITTING THEY WERE GAY. HAS THE RCMP EVER SAD IT WAS SORRY TO ALL THE MENS AND WOMENS LIVES THEY DESTROYED. HAVE THINGS REALLY CHANGED THAT MUCH IN SUCH A SHORT TIME? THE RCMP RECENTLY HAD A HUMAN RIGHTS COMPLIANT AGANIST IT IN NEW BRUNSWICK. READ THE STORY FOR YOURSELF. THE DETAILS OF IT ARE SHOCKING. THE TRIBUNAL WAS HELD IN BATHURST N.B THIS PAST WINTER. ALSO, WHY IS IT THAT THERE ARE ALMOST NO OPENLY GAY MEN SERVING ON MAJOR MUNICIPAL POLICE FORCES? WANT PROFF? READ ABOUT CONST. CHRIS SMITH OF THE VANCOUVER POLICE FORCE. A STRAIGHT MALE WHO TOOK ON YHE POSITION OF GAY LIASON OFFICER TO THE CITY'S GAY COMMUNITY BECAUSE NOT ONE GAY OR LESBIAN OFFICER WOULD COME FORWARD TO DO THE JOB. HOW CAN A FORCE THE SIZE OF VANCOUVER NOT HAVE ONE GAY OFFICER WHO FEELS SAFE OR COMFORTABLE TO ADMIT WHO THEY ARE? ARE GAYS REALLY THAT SECURE ON CANADAS POLCE FORCES? HOW ABOUT EDMONTON? A RECENT ARTICLE ON GAY SENSITIVITY TRANING THE FORCE IS CONDUCTING WITH NEW RECRUITS WHERE RECRUITS GO OUT IN PLAIN CLOTHES AND HOLD HANDS AS SAME SEX COUPLES TO SEE THE REACTION THEY GET FROM PEOPLE WENT ON TO SAY THAT ALTHOUGH THE FORCE HAD A FEW OPENLY GAY WOMEN, NOT ONE GAY MAN ON THE FORCE WAS OPEN ABOUT HIS SEXUALITY. GAY MEN EMBRACED ON CANADIAN POLICE FORCES? I QUESTION THAT. CHRISTINE SILVERBERG,WHEN SHE WAS CHIEF OF CALGARY TRIED TO GET MORE GAY MEN TO APPLY TO THE FORCE AND ALTHOUGH SHE DID MANAGE TO GET SOME GAY WOMEN TO APPLY TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE SHE WAS NOT VERY SUCCESSFUL,GOD BLESS HER FOR TRYING . MY QUESTION IS THIS, IF GAYS ARE REALLY SO WELCOLME IN POLICING TODAY,HOW IS IT THAT THREE OF CANADAS LARGEST POLICE FORCES, NOT ONE GAY MAN FEELS COMFORTABLE TO BE OPEN ABOUT WHO HE IS?I AM ASKING WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON?I CANT HELP BUT WONDER IF GAY MEN WOULD BE HIRED AT ALL! BUT YET, WE ARE TO BELIEVE THAT GAY PEOPLE ARE NOW WELCOLME ON CANADAS NATIONAL POLICE FORCE?IM SORRY I WONT MAKE ANY ACCUSATIONS,BUT YOU MUST FORGIVE ME FOR BEING SKEPTICAL.THINGS CHANGE, BUT NOT THAT MUCH IN THE SPACE OF TEN,TWELVE YEARS OR SO. WHAT DO I WANT? FOR GAY MEN AND WOMEN TOAPPLY IN DROVES TO CANADIAN POLICE FORCES . SHOW UP FOR INFOMATION SESSIONS WITH YOUR SAME-SEX PARTNER AND WATCH THEIR JAWS DROP!HELL,PLANT A BIG WET KISS ON EACH OTHER AS YOU WISH EACH OTHER LUCK AS YOU BEGIN TO RIGHT THE RPAT! STAND UP AND INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND SAY I "I AM A GAY CANADIAN AND I WANT TO BE AM PROUD MEMBER OF CANADAS NATIONAL POLICE FORCE BECAUSE I BELIEVE GAY MEN AND WOMEN MAKE GREAT COPS! WHY NOT WEAR A RAINBOW PIN ON YOUR SHRIT. FRANKLEY, I THINK GAYS MAKE BETTER COPS BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO BE THAT MUCH BETTER.ENCOURAGE EVERY GAY PERSON YOU KNOW TO CONSIDER A CAREER WITH RCMP EVEN IF ITS ONLY FOR THE FIVE YEAR SERVICE. COME ON PEOPLE STOP HIDING. HAVE THE COURAGE TO DO WHAT I DID NOT. TEARS STREAM DOWN MY FACE AS I TYPE THIS,ONLY BECAUSE I DONT WANT TO SEE PEOPLE BEB ASHAMED OF WHO THEY ARE. I THINK THE ONLY WAY TO DO THAT IS TO BE OPEN ABOUT WHO YOU ARE. THERE HAS BEEN MUCH PAIN IN MY LIFE BECAUSE I WAS ALWAYS AFRAID. BUT YOU YOUNGER PEOPLE NOW HAVE A CHANCE TO CHANGE THINGS AND MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE. I WOULD LIKE TO POST AGAIN IF NOBODY WOULD MIND. AGAIN, I DID NOT MEAN TO OFFEND ANYONE. I AM SORRY. GO FORTH KIDS AND HAVE A WONDERFUL CAREER AND ENJOY YOUR TIME AT DEPOT AND BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE.

Hello Bob, It's not all bad...at least there are a few of us that applied! As far as I know, there are some gay officers in Toronto. By the way, here's a link to the article about Cst Robert Ploughman who came out during his RCMP training at the depot. www.xtra.ca/site/toronto2/archvx/body1.shtmRichee

Why is it that homosexuals feel the need to walk around and announce to the world they are gay? You don't see heterosexuals running around screaming their sexual preferrence. Just do the training and maintain the status quo. I am a heterosexual of over 30 years and have not once had someone come up to me and ask me my sexual preferrence. Relax. What makes you think it will even come up? Do you run around in womans underwear? Wear boxers at depot.
PS What is wrong with good old Alberta? You from Quebec?

It's true, there's really no need to announce to the world per se but some of the gay applicants are concern that they won't be treated fairly by the department and may not accepted by their peers...not talking about wearing woman's underwear but more realistically how one would be perceived if one were to introduce your same sex partner to your coworkers. I could tell you from my own experiences that uninvited discriminatory comments/actions against a gay person tends to quite extreme and hurtful. Just so that i'm clear on this wondering guest, just what is your definition of "the status quo"? Tell me, would you work with a gay officer if you had to? Be honest now i won't tell. Also, since you are heterosexual now for over 30 years as you so confidently proclaim to us(but you know what they say dear, "never say never")i am assuming this would not be a problem for you. why are you asking about quebec?Do you fear quebecois also? typical. I suppose you are aganist bilingual also?Would you work with a gay officer who was also quebcois? How about if i also revelaled to you that i am also a black man? think you could handle that ?Incidently,i have never said anything aganist Alberta.I think you are confusing me with someone else."BI" the way, why are you posting in this section anyway? I be a guessing yer just one of da "CURIOUS" ones, ain't ya? p.s just for the record ,i have never worn women's underwear, nor have i ever had the desire to do so. In fact i don't like boxers or briefs either. If you must know, i prefer men's bikini style style 3452 in midnight black by Calvin klein to be exact. (and nope, he ain't no relation to good ole Ralph.)

I remembered a friend my mine asked me this, "Why would they have such a thing as gay parade, I don't see that we have a straight parade." It seems really really hard to explain, because you have to walk the walk to understand the reason behind it. Straight people never have to be fearful of being "out", they don't have to explain to the world as to why they look different, in fact they will always be the "normal" one. They pretty much set the standard for everybody and assume everyone else to follow it.
Hey I have nothing against straight. But while I was reading newspaper the other day, one of my co-worker saw the headline saying "Lesbian celebrating their first anniversary" And all she said was " That is sick"
Which part of it is sick? The sex part? The marriage? Or what? I don't understand. Aren't marriage supposingly to be something good, a symbol of re-union between two people. It's just that simple. And yet in someone's mind, it can be sick. How can something as pure as that be seeing sick if the person who said so isn't sick?
Everyday I struggle with my identity. Everyone who have an eye know that I am a lesbian. I didn't just declare it. If I would have dress "normal", I would be seen as "Straight". So what should I do, my dear guest?

:-XI was wondering about what constable Sales meant when he said "omiting certian information in the recruiting process could prove"fatal" to ones career? sounds a little dark to me.Is that how theRCMP keeps it's gay and lesbian officers in line?By holding an axe over their head if they don"t disclose their sexual orientation?fear is a great weapon isn"t? something which gays and lesbians know only to well. lets hear from all those gay officers that ryan and marcus claim that they know. the truth should be told on this issue once and for all.

Get over yourself....
Holding ANY information back regardless of your sexual information in your RCMP interview will most likely mean you don't get hired. It means that you have something to hide and something you could be blackmailed about.... thus unable to get a secruity clearance.
By the way, that goes for potential constables as well as potential support staff in the office.

How sweet!I'm sure that in 2005 one will be blackmailed for being gay.Don't insult my intelligence! They just find an easy exuse to defer a gay applicant for some petty excuse that they would not even look at if it was a straight applicant.I don't see the guys who enjoy all the easy sex that most male police officers eagerly take advantage of getting fired or losing their security clearances. The married guys who screw around don't seem to be a security risk.Being married 2,3,4 times does'nt seem to be a problem either.Awful me telling secrets ,eh?No the hetro male can do no wrong in this world ,only the faggots are a security risk, right?I am so sick and fed up with the hypocritical bullshit of it being a security issue as to why they can't keep their minds of gays. No gay man or women in this country is that naieve as to believe that their career are not risk from having it known in a file somewhere of who it is they are sleeping with.Ihave never seen a hetro male lose his job for his sex life,no matter how immoral he is or the "badge bunnys" he's involved with. A security issue ,GIVE ME A F---ING BREAK!They just find a way to get rid of you because they are so petty and small minded and scared to death a gay man will be a STAFF SERGENT before they will and they might have to address him as"SIR".Hell you can get a badge bunny pregnant and transfer out and it still won't hurt your career!I am not going to bother with this issue again.Frankley,it has become tedious bore."GET OVER YOURSELF". Who the hell do you think you are? Maybe all the members of the U.S. military who are still losing their careers on a daily basis because of their sexuality should just "GET OVER IT",right?I don't think any hetro male like you marcus has right to make any comments on anything with regard to this issue.I think you should just keep your "experiences" to yourself.Dont bother posting a response to this either.NOTHING YOU SAY IS OF ANY GREAT IMPORTANCE,STRAIGHT BOY!

Food for thought.

Hey Bob.... calm down!!! you are ranting and raving about a topic no-one has any bearing over. Why don't you just go down to the recruiting division and let them know how you feel...if being gay won't get you hired (which I have the feeling you are choked because something has happened to you regarding your sexuality, and therefore has caused you to spaz all over this message board) then certainly your whining and complaining about it won't either.

Somebody has a problem with being gay but i don't think it's the R.C.M.P. or the other officers.I am sorry for what ever has happened to you Bob, but you need to move on and get over the past.Cheer up!Gay guys seem to be very popular these days!I am sure you will be well treated with respect and fairness if you just learn to be accept who you are. There is nothing more stressful than trying to present yourself as someone you are not.If your not happy and don't respect yourself, other people won't respect or feel comfortable around you either and the interviwers will pick up on that as well.Just be who you are and i'm sure everthing will work out fine for you!
