In the Calgary Herald, page 3, City & Region section, Saturday, October 30, 2004, the inspector i/c of the HR dept. clearly states that "gone are the days of the 6'2" white anglo-saxin police officer" in ref. to their attempt to recruit from the minority population. Interestingly enough, they had 900 applicants last year. I remember a few years back when it was at the 4000 mark. Now, with 900 applicants last year, dragging the bottom of the barrel, and they are making comments like this, indicating that the days of us "white folk" getting on the force are gone? Well, gone is my application. I'll go to Edmonton were they do not discriminate.

I will have to dig that up and read it. But I am currently in training and I am 6ft2 210lbs white male....there are four of us around the 6ft mark and all white males. Maybe he/she was trying to say that they don't get alot of guys my size applying?

One only needs attend and information or exam session in order to understand that in fact the opposite is true...most are WASP's. Clearly, we wont be welcomed if competing against a lesser qualified minority.

One would hope your buddies are "english speaking", or do they offer interviews in French, Mandarin, Cantonese, Italian, etc...?

I haven't read the article, but I would certainly take a comment such as that to say that they are interested in people from all races, heights, languages and backgrounds. Not to say they are not interested in the 6'2" white guys but that they are ALSO interested in the 5'0" white girls, or the 5'4" asian guys, or the 6'7" darker men or women. I think the nature of the comment would be to not allow anyone to be discouraged from applying just because they don't fit the profile of what they feel is the expected appearance and background of a police officer. But rather, throw out the pre-conceived notions because the face of the service is changing.
Just my 2 cents, D's Wife

First you said "One only needs attend and information or exam session in order to understand that in fact the opposite is true.".. so how would you have observe this without applying?? I think you need to apply in order to write the test. 2nd, no one, besides criminals, has a hate on for a police service until they are defered. 3rd, you said white folk weren't welcome.. 70% of a recent class was white males. 4th, every police service is looking to hire minorities right now to reflect the community it polices. 5th, if you don't like it you better learn to love it. Bitching here isn't going to change anything.

I really don't think being a visible minority get me in any easier than a white male/female. I believe everyone who get hired is deem to be the best in the eye of a recruiter. At least, that's what I believe in the department I am applying. Gotta have faith with your future deparment.

It all depends on the person, not the colour of the skin. I just think the story is the police service would like to see more minorities applying to reflect the population of the city. That's all. And ya, you have to have faith in the force you're applying to.

I have not read the article, but this is my take from the posted remarks. It seems they are attempting to inform the public that anyone can potentially be a police officer, a common stereotype of cops is that they must be at least 6 feet, and the majorty of police are white males. The stereotype comes from old requirements of departments. Here in PA there was a minimum height requirement of 6 feet, and many people today do not realize that is not the case. When I applied many people told me I had to be taller, which is obviously not the case. PA did a similar campagin a few years back to attract and inform more people that physical attributes are not the basis for hire. These are just my thoughts, I would find it hard to believe a police agency would post an ad that activly discriminated against white applicants. Take care and be safe.

LOL, I always love the "But you don't speak French..." comments when I tell someone I'm applying to the mounties...or the " I didn't know you could ride a horse." Or "They won't send you to your home province." I get the french one the most.. but they don't ask.. they tell me. "You need to speak french." "No I don't" "Then what if they send you to quebec" "I won't be. It's not a contract policing province and the greatest need is the west. And even then, it's not a prerequsite" "I am pretty sure I read it somewhere." "Alright then" Assclowns

Oh yes. EVERYONE knows EVERYTHING about applying to or working for the RCMP...even though the only contact they ever have had with the Mounties is when they got pulled over for speeding. "Yeah, thanks for that advicce buddy, I'll keep it in mind." Going back to the actaul point of this thread, I wonder if Jim Bob was one of the people running the site (standfirm.net or something) that was accusing the CPS of racism, bullying, etc. The site is down now, and I wasn't able to take a look at all the allegations. I think someone with access has been leaking memos to the media here since I've seen at least two memos in stories. Wonder if someone is bitter they got missed for a promotion...
