I think this has been covered in some of the other threads, but I'm not sure. If it hasn't been covered here is has definitely been covered at blueline ( www.blueline.ca/forum/). From what I understand its pretty hard to get a visa for a job in LE down in the states, mainly due to the fact that there has to be a lack of qualified residents (americans) for them to issue you a work visa/green card. One way around it would be if a spouse was offered a job in the states, then after a year you can apply for your green card and then apply to agencies...or something like that anyway.

If I might add: I AM an American and I like to think I am QUALIFIED to answer this question... My answer is somewhat speculative but I am certain that most (not all) US agencies require an applicant to be a US citizen. I think there are only a few agencies around the US that will hire someone who is legally able to work in the US and have no US citizenship requirement. If it is in your heart to be a US cop, I can only encourage you to do some serious surfing and research to locate agencies that do not require US citizenship. Just my humble opinion... -- Charlie

samsteele--
Not familiar with that issue OR, what sort of qualifications or requirements one would have to meet in order to obtain citizenship in the US. I would suggest perhaps looking up the US Immigration web site or something like that for more information. BUT, I also suspect that IF you were to pursue US citizenship, you're looking at a few years at least before you could even get it. It is something that you don't get overnight...
Oh yeah, would it be of any benefit or give you an edge in terms of a career? I don't think it will be the "magic bullet" you're looking for like you think it is... Just my opinion... -- Charlie

I know this thread is old, but if the guy asking the question is still reading and REALLY wants American citizenship and to work in US Law Enforcement...one sure way is to enlist with the military in the US. Most devisions (Army, Navy, Marines...) will offer full US Citizenship after serving for five years. It seems like a long time, but if you're trying to get into the US any other way it will probably take longer and there is no guarantee that you will get anything other than a work permit. Plus, with a US military background it will also help your chances of being hired.

'devisions' also spelt correctly as 'divisions'...however, who's looking....aside from recruiters

LAPD hires you only with a green card. No citizenship need. ;D
