Hey Guys, First off, I'd like to thank everyone on this board...you do not understand how great this place is... I'm going for my interview at the end of Aug...I'm very nervous as I'm sure most are. I was wondering if people had any advice on the following things I've made up that my hold me back. I know you can't say much about the interview. I just wanted to bring up a few things in my past that I fiugerd I'd get your advice on. 1) Gambling - I like going to the casino here & there & playing blackjack..I mean it's not something I depend on & I could stop going tomorrow if I was aksed too... but I do like it as a hobby. 2) Pot - I've smoked pot 3-5 times. Grad campout (2000) & also at a party in Feb of 2001. Maybe once or twice after but nothing more. I have friends that smoke it & I have been around it, but never have smoked it since...wish I never did . Do i just stay straight up that I've smoked it & I wish I never did...are they going to ask me to detail where I smoked it & with who)? 3) One bad bad birthday night in Vegas. Lets just say it was a dumb drunk thing & involved a girl that friends bought :S I didnt know, pretty stupid I guess lol. Anyways, not sure what they think of that since thats as close to a prostitute as you can get. 4) When I was younger I fell & lost my front tooth. It's not held in by a mouth peice. I've never had a problem with it, I can remove it if needed (But then I'm missing my front tooth). I'm wondering if this will be a mark against me when the dental comes around Other than those three things, I feel I'm a great person. I have been coaching hockey in the same league since I was 17, I work for a large Bank & even tho they know I'm applying to the RCMP & that Im close, they still promoted me a few weeks ago since they are willing to take that chance on me. I have gone & done my first-aid cerft, had one since I was 19. I have no criminal record & haven't ever been arrested. 1 or 2 speeding tickets, but nothing major to report. THanks again for all your advice..your making my gut feel alot better about this. <Moose>

How old are you? That's pretty recent to have smoked pot! I would say the things you've done are not favorable. I would just be totally honest with them and let the interviewer be the judge.

Unfortunately for you I believe that the RCMP requires 5 years drug free. As for the prostitute......... good luck - but I am positive that they will want a good number years and a lot maturity between that incident and if/when they let you in.

While you have deffinetly made some "bad" decisions, don't let this stop you from applying. I'm not going to BS you, your chances of being accepted at this time in your life are pretty small, BUT that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. The worst they can do is say sorry try again in 2 years. You do have a chance of getting accepted, all be it small, IF, and I mean a big IF, you can articulate why your choices were wrong, what you learned from them and how thye have helped you to become a better more mature individual.
As for the pot use, 3 years is sufficiant for RCMP but the longer the better. I tried pot once 10 years ago and my interviewer was OK with it but I had to really explain my actions regarding it.
Wish you luck!

I have a 15 year old brother, I attribute a lot of my life towards him, he keeps me in line because I dont wanna set the wrong example. Your post atleast gives me a glimmer of hope... I've already applied, got a high score on my rpat, got 3:18 on my pare & did my application. Interview is pretty soon, so thats the next step...i'm just gonna be straight up & hopfully he/she respects me for what I'm saying.

Moose,
The pot isn't too big of a deal. But I know I smoked it 5 years ago, and I may or may not have had to go into great detail about it. Also, they don't like applicants who hang around pot.. they want applicants to walk out if it shows up at a party or whatever.. never hang around dope.
Also the biggest mark is the whore. I know an applicant who was deferred for throwing in $20 for a escort service to send a stripper for a bachelor party 3 years ago. But the best thing you can do is tell everything honestly and let the expert decide.
Salut R

How are you with alcohol? Sounds like most of your indiscretions coincide with alcohol/circle of friends. The gambling shouldn't be a problem...I hope!
How is your credit rating? Could you afford to go 6 months w/out a paycheque? I assume that since you work at a bank, you must be bondable.
How bad were your speeding tickets? Did you plead guilty or fight it? What were the circumstances that you got the ticket?
It seems like you have some problem in every aspect of your security clearance. You have some speeding tickets (as opposed to none), some drug use (fairly recent). The whore was legal, I guess, since you didn't solicit her...but it doesn't really compliment your decision-making ability.

Again, I have left a number of partys in the past year because of people doing things that I shouldnt be around. My credit rating is as good as one can get, I have about 25,000 put away in savings so I can afford to go six months. I live at home, have no rent, no car payment, full support from my parents. I have no visa debt, no loans or lines of credit, nothing owing except a phone bill. My speeding tickets we not excessive, they were 176 bucks each, one I fought & the officer did not show up, my recent one was however in may, my first in 3 years & I paid that one the next day, as advised by the officer that pulled me over. The "whore" was def the worst thing, I def wish I could take that one back.

Moose,
In my opinion I would say you don't stand a chance.
Recent drug use, sex with a prostitute only a year or two ago (if it was longer than that then you were in Vegas drinking illegally), gambling, alcohol abuse to the point you lose control (see prostitute), only 22 years old.
Stand back and take a real good look at your track record. I will go on record right now and say there is NO way you are getting past the interview now. Sorry. Wait at least 3 or 4 years before applying. I don't know the RCMP's policy on prostitutes but you may be deferred for life. They may not have a statute of limitations on that sort of thing. Prostitution is related to drugs, violence, pimping, theft, etc. The fact that you recently participated in that sort of activity demonstrates how young, nieve, and immature you really are.

I have left a number of partys in the past year because of people doing things that I shouldnt be around. The fact that you continued to go to these partys even though a normal person can assume the same stuff would be happening isn't good either. I knew I wanted to be a cop, and in-turn I swore off house parties. Haven't been to one since high school. That way I know that I won't be around people smoking pot.

Well it's a little to late to wait for my interview since I'm already schedule for 1st week of Sept interview. I'm gonna go, keep my head high & take all the flak I get for doing what I've done. When I was 19, I wasent thinking about becoming an RCMP officer. My circle of friends has changed a lot, I keep myself away from people that smoke pot or do stuff that wouldnt look good. Odds are I'm going to fail this interview, & that I'm fine with because in the end, if they feel I'm not ready for it or am a threat in anyway, then I really shouldnt be a part of the force to begin with. I will be upfront & honest with everything, if by some luck I do make it, well then I guess I owe a big thank you to the person that passes me for giving me a chance to prove myself. You might want to rethink using term "whore" as well
