A friend of mine is a diabetic and got his RCMP package in December/03(which he sent off). Last month he got a letter from the RCMP about his diabetes stating his blood sugar has to be canadian stand for 2 years and some other stuff. Is this normal procedure? Has any one go into the force who is diabetic?

Yes, actually, I am a type one diabetic and I'm almost through the application process. When I sent in my package, being diabetic sent up a red flag, so I got a letter from the med office in Ottawa asking for letters from my optometrist, endocrinologist, and copies of my blood glucose measurements from the past two years. I've come to understand that the med officer just wanted to see that my condition was stable and under control. Having a couple hypo or hyperglycemic episodes won't get your friend deferred, fortunately. They want to see a general healthy trend. After all, they can't have their constables collapsing from low blood sugar in the middle of a shift, can they?! So, being diabetic doesn't automatically get you deferred. They judge each applicant/patient on an individual basis. HOWEVER, I'd be interested to find out how your friend gets his/her insulin. I use an insulin pump which means I don't have to take insulin according to any particular schedule, as oppossed to using daily injections which usually need to be taking at specific time intervals. If I didn't have my pump, I would never have applied. It is only through the use of an insulin pump that I enjoy the freedom and flexibility nessissary to handle an unpredictable and unscripted job like an RCMP constable. As disappointing as it my turn out to be, your friend has to ask him/herself how stable their diabetic health is. If it isn't, applying to be a police officer may not be a good idea at this time.

Vancouver, BC Police Dept. recently hired a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic, he made the front page of the local paper, VPD saying it can't hurt to apply, as long as your sugars are under contol. An HgBA1C test is a good indicator of your sugars over the last few months if you have not documented your glucometer readings.

I'm type one diabetic and I'm in troop 29 starting january 30th 2005. If you can show that you have your blood glucose measurements undercontrol, you'll be ok!

That is really encouraging. I will pass that on to an acquaintance who was considering joining but hesitated because of diabetes. This board is very helpful!
