Any tips in preparing for depot? I'm running and working out, what TEXT would help set me apart from the rest there? Stuff I should read up on? I don't own a gun, should I get some shooting experience in? I'm bored waiting to hear back and runing out of stuff to distract myself with. Thanks

Other than making sure you're in good shape, there's not much too do but wait. Have you already recieved your distance learning access? That will help kill some time. As for the shooting, if there is a gun club in your area it won't hurt to go and see what its like to fire the weapons, but DO NOT take any courses that will train you to shoot. The force is VERY picky about how you use your weapins, and if you "know how" before you get there they will spend a s**t load of time breaking you of the habbits you picked up and then re-training you to do it their way. Like I said if you've never shot a handgun/rifle/shotgun and want to just see what its like then that shouldn't cause any problems, but it will also only kill maybe a day of the wait.
Congrats on making it though.

Thanks I know this is an old post, but a bit of advise if you are still around the board. When at depot, you don't WANT to be "set apart from the rest". The best policy is to fly under the radar. They teach you everything you need to know, so don't worry. RELAX, enjoy your life as a civie!! RY

My husband is in depot currently (7 weeks left ). We asked around before he left to see what he could do to prepare. Based on the info we compiled, he began to increase his running to 5 miles which has helped him greatly for the PARES he has had to do in depot as well as the long distance runs. He also maintained his weight training. In hind site, I think he would have gone for physiotherapy (or whatever) on his shoulder which is mildly seperated and causing his some grief. Joining a gun club certainly wouldn't have hurt either. Some things I would have packed to begin with are: 10 v-neck white shortsleeved undershirts(so they never show under the uniform shirt)/ 7 knit collared shirts (with the three buttons)--they don't wrinkle/ 10 black socks/10 white socks 2 pairs of good runners/lots of old T shirt rags for polishing leather/ Advil for injuries/

White socks for the gym...
Dot mentioned black socks, however, rather than black, they technically should be blue socks to match what we are issued.
Cheers, RY

FRIDAY... nice to see another troop mate onteh board! I start the 11th too! I fly out from Vancouver with 3 other guys and a girl. I've had a heads up fom a friend in Troop 2 that: 1) Troop 2 will be our "Big Brother" Troop 2) some of us, if not all, will be housed (perhaps only temporarily) in "C" Block which has all the 1 and 4 bed rooms, not the "barracks" style sleeping arrangements (so I'm told) LOL.. I even found out I'm in Room 314 bed #1, hahha.... come look me up when you get in. My flight arrives around 1300 hrs on the 11th. See you there! Chris Hi Dot, Curious about the socks - can they only be white or black? I start Tueday May 11. Thanks, J

Fantastic! The two guys I met at our re-PARE test are starting Tuesday as well, and it looks like the beginnings of a great troop.
Just got back from Wal-mart with some white socks and under-shirts. I'm bringing what I've got for dress cloths for now, and if it's a problem I'll have to do some more shopping on our first weekend.
See you in a few!
Jason

Jason.... I think I'll have to be getting ALOT of stuff from WAL MART the first weekend. Have you heard EXACTLY what we are supposed to be wearing the first few days? I know it says "business attire", but that can cover alot of things. Short-sleeved collared shirts with ties? Long sleeved shirts and ties? I had to get another pair of dress shoes today cause I seen to have out-grown the ones I've had for a while now. By the way, where are you coming from? Don't know if I said before, but I'm coming from the Vancouver area. See you there! Chris

From what I gather, long sleeve shirts with ties/dress pants OR short sleeve shirts with no tie are acceptable (dress shirts). I'm bringing my entire dress clothes ensemble, which included 2 long sleeve shirts, 1 short sleeve, and 2 pairs of pants So, I will be making a shopping trip I'm sure. I actually live about 1/2 hour from Regina, so as long as I've got what I need the first few days, I am lucky that I can scoot home for supplies. I hope we all get our kit quick, then we don't have to worry about dress duds. The closest Wal-mart is still a few miles from Depot, so we can take my truck down for picking up our storage trunks, and hangers (they have to match your pit partners). J

Yea, that's basically what I heard from my friend that is there (about the attire...). He also told me that he was able to get 2 storage trunks, so I hope I'm with someone that wants to pony up for another trunk, 'cause I have ALOT of crap to bring with me. lol See you there Jason! Chris

Jenniferline,
Congrats to your boyfriend...AND you!!! Getting through the 24 weeks of depot is definately something YOU will be just as proud of!
From someone who has experienced Depot, I'd ask a favor of you! Give it your 110% to be supportive/forgiving of your boyfriend. Depot takes it's emotional toll, and without a supportive partner, it can be VERY tough!
However, when you make it through it (you can ask my wife)...it'll be the greatest thing ever!!! And, according to my wife, it's not THAT bad being married to a mountie! Heh heh!
Cheers, RY

Hi Jenniferline, You might find this website helpful: groups.msn.com/RCMPWivesandFamiliesThis is a group for applicants, those with a family member at depot and those that have already graduated. Very nice people there - you can ask them anything, they are very helpful. Most of them have been through the same things and can offer advice. This is the public MSN group, you can also apply to become a member on the private group from this site. Best wishes and congrats to your boyfriend! C
