I went to an info session and was told the RCMP use the Poly but ONLY in some cases. My husband went through the process out of Ontario and never had the Polygraph, it wasn't even mentioned at his info session (back in 2001).
Furthermore, in my own opinion, the "threat" (for lack of a better word) of a Polygraph is used to ensure that applicants disclose all relevant issues and are honest from the getgo. In this case, they then wouldn't be getting surprises here and there as applicants move forward, or at least hope to deter them...how annoying would that be for recruiting having someone call...."Oh, I forgot to mention"...I mean, give me a break, no one forgets when they do something wrong or break the law. I know of a few cases for other muny forces that do use it that weed out all sorts of people because of this exact thing getting phonecalls days before they are to be polygraphed saying exactly "OH, I forgot to mention"...
On another note with the Poly, at the info session we ("E" div. applicants) were told only SOME people could get the poly....to me this doesn't make any sense.....whose to say that there isn't any sort of discrimination (again, for a lack of a better word) or any type of hiring bias towards those who they think may be lying versus those who they feel aren't. The Polygraph is expensive and the RCMP in my opinion doesn't have the doe to dish out tests for every single applicant...it just isn't feasible.
So, in the end, I feel they just say that there is a potential you COULD be polygraphed to weed out those who could/may be lying. Who knows...I could be totally wrong, but that is just my opinion.
If your upfront, open and honest in the beginning you have nothing to worry about.
Goodluck

I can't remember exactly, but I believe Ontario has a law prohibiting the use of the poolygraph as a pre-employment tool...I remember hearing something about it over on Blueline...take a look over there, you might turn up more info.
