I'm scheduled to do my polygraph examination tomorrow morning. I'm freaking out! not that i have anything to hide. All this talk of people being truthful and flunking for no real reason is getting to me...what should I wear? any specific relaxation techinques?....How should I approach this?...

An RCMP pre-employment poly? If so I think you are one of the first.

George Maschke will be along shortly to give you a link to his website. Just look around for one of the thousands of other posts about the poly

Too late to do anything about it now. Go in and hope to what ever God you pray to that you don't get labelled deceptive or inconclusive. If so, kiss policing goodbye forever. Good luck!

OK, I've heard almost everyones input on the poly, and both sides have valid points, myself I'm not for the poly but I'm not against it either...anyways... I've talked to quite a few people that have gone through the poly since I'm going to have to do one with CPS anyways, and ALMOST ALL have said it was no big deal, and they didn't know what all the fuss was about. However, in George's and "Guest's" defence, it does all rest on the examiner and his "interpretations". Just try to relax and do your best, it is totally out of your control, unless your planning on lying, or you are a trained covert ops specialist, in which case I don't think you would be applying to the RCMP... If you have time, take a quick peek at the lie behind the lie detector book, DON"T read the sections on how to beat a poly, could easily cause a mis-reading and f**k you if you don't know what you're doing. Besides if nothing else the actual history behind the poly makes for a good read, and "TLBTLD" does have some good pointers. I'm sure you'll be fine! ;D

j2cps....since you read the TLBTLD and the counter-measures "how to beat it" and all, do you think this will f**k you up when you do the poly? I agree with your position that you don't agree with the poly but your not against it. Kinda how I feel. I don't like the subjective nature of it....but the fact that it will weed out some shady characters is kinda nice.
Good luck RCMPhereicome.....tell us at what point during the interview that your nerves stop wanting to make you take a s**t every ten minutes.

My thoughts exactly r2...
Sorry if miscommunicated regarding the book, I didn't read any of the sections regarding counter measures or beating the poly. Didn't want to take any chances. Will definetly read them after I'm on with an agency though, I'm sure they are very interesting sections.

RCMPhereicome, was this poly for the RCMP or for the other municipal force you're concurrently applying to?

done and done! I PASSED! oh man. Afeter almost 4 hours its finally over. It wasn't what I thought it would be. It is VERY accurate. I had read some tricks to throw it off, but apparantly no luck. This thing is really accurate and sensitive(As far as measuring heart rate, sweat, and breathing goes). I couldn't even feel my heart rate go up for some of the questions, but after the etective showed me the graphs, it was so clear which questions made me uncomfortable. The way it worked was that I filled a 5 page questionare with a bunch of personal questions on it. I found out that most questions could be interpreted in many ways and they fully understand that some questions make you feel uncomfortable and react physiologically due to their invasiveness. The way it worked for me was that I answered about 150 personal questions on the form anad was later asked not even a quarter of them on the actual poly. The graphs looked like I had lied on a few questions and the detective asked about them after the test. I explained that some of them made me uncomfortable and some irrelevant things popped into my mind when they were asked. It was all pretty good. The detective was super nice and friendly and very encouraging. he let me know that I passed at the end and forwarded the results to the head detective. He basically got to know me really well and got very personal before starting the whole thing. They apparantly have the right to override the machine if they feel like your characteristics just dont agree with the machine results on the screen. So they dont worry too much about a lot of things. The reason many fail is due to the fact that they actually tell the truth and the truth is what hurts them. Some people have just made really bad mistakes in the past that even being really honest about them will still hurt them. I'm just glad that its over...oh yah, this wasn't for the RCMP, its a muni...

RCMPhericome,
Just wondering how the application is coming along. Hopefully no snags with the poly or BI.

Everything seems to be going well. I had my final medical exams done, results are in, BGI is done, all references contacted. Now just waiting to find out whether I'm in the mid-November class or the February class...
