There's nothing wrong with being interested in salary. Pay is one of the factors that made me jump from my current flying job to wanting to join the RCMP. I knew it would take me many years of flying to get up to making what a Mountie makes after just three years.

Well the only forces I know starting salaries are:
RCMP - $38,571 (After Depot) CPS - +$40,000 (New contract coming up in 2004 though) I don't remember the exact figure, and they haven't updated the website with this info yet. EPS - $36,000
Search the web for the agencies you are interested in. Most of the websites contain salary info, but it is easier if people can just post them here... ;D

Well just like down here in the "other North America" salaries are an important aspect of policing(it would be embarrassing to be a cop and watch someone on public assistance be able to buy more groceries for their family than you can!) but don't fall into the "chasing the money only" trap-some of those higher paying agencies don't always have officer satisfaction or concern at heart (i.e. joe citizens'" I know the chief and can get you fired" towns). I was surprised to check some of the Canadian "Police Services" sites and obs'd that most of the salaries are fairly close( avg $38K-62K ) compared to the vast regional and market differences in the U.S., and particularly in California (salaries across the state can be from $32K to $90K/yr! but that depends on the areas cost of living, as the Bay area of N.Calif. and the South Calif. areas median housing prices are $350-400K!).Go for an agency which is 1) interested in you as a candidate(believe it or not some larger Depts care more than some smaller agencies) 2) trains and motivates it officers through activities other than negative discipline 3) has a strong union 4) has a Good mgm't team 4) Good relations with the community 5) has growth potential for the officer as well as good retirement benefits -hint, money is good, but most young officers don't realize that money for the older yrs is more important than money in the hand now!.Stay away from "dodge city" type Depts(i.e.,L.A.P.D. catches hell but OAKLAND PD is in HELL!!!) as those Depts have serious officer safety issues and high officer turn over( I know we got into this business not to shy from danger, but being regularly shot at is not the way to career longevity).I really don't know if there are other types of Law enforcement up there like Transit PDs,School or College PDs,but if there are give them the once over -they might actually provide the lifestyle you want............

If I were chasing money, I wouldn't go into this profession. I went to university with a full scholarship and I had the choice of studying anything and if I lived for money I would have gone into business. Salary is a very important factor and I didn't spend $40,000 to get an education and end up working for minimum wage...

There's certainly nothing wrong with trying to get top salary BUT, as an example, it can sometimes be a "bad" thing depending upon the department. In my neck of the woods, there's an agency which is known to pay well and has been able to maintain the high pay status for quite sometime. This department is also known to be very picky about minor things. I have heard rumor they often have openings for a variety of reasons and having the attitude something to the effect of: "Hey, we have long lines of people who'd love to have your job." Whenever they test for new officers, they regularly have the luxury of having large numbers of people testing for the department. (A luxury some area departments only wish they had). It can be quite competitive. BUT,....like anything else, it all depends upon what YOU want. Great salary is nice but if the job essentially sucks, all the money in the world won't make you happy. -- Charlie
