I was contacted by the Edmonton Police Service to provide a reference for a friend of mine who is the end stages of their hiring process. I had a long conversation with the recruiter who gave me some interesting info. Edmonton is planning on hiring 54 people for a class on September 12th. They are also going to have 4 members from Camrose join in the training. Edmonton and Camrose have had joint training for some time. The recruiter was of the opinion that they may not fill all 54 positions for the fall as they have not received enough qualified applicants. Moreover, the city of Edmonton is currenlty looking at some budget cuts. Historically, this effects police recruiting. The recruiter commented that the budget cut will not mean a cut in recruiting.
Anyway, just some first hand info that I thought those interested in applying to Edmonton would want to know. Also, the last few years Edmonton has got a bad reputation for deferring qualified applicants who then go on to get hired by Calgary Police or elsewhere. I got a very positive feel from the Edmonton recruiter...and it seems that their hiring philosophy has switched somewhat from the mid to late nineties to now.

I know what you mean about how EPS does the testing...for starters, the physical is not equal. Women have more time to complete the same obstacle course the men do...some of the exercises are different for women.. I did their physical. Passed all the exercises..the chin ups and dips I got the min requirement in..I was the third fastest in the obstacle course...under 2.30 but was failed due to a BFI they pegged me at .5% over their allowable of 19%...which was wrong because I had a proper one done before I went and I was 13.5 to 15% doing three tests... What difference does it make if I can do all the requirements with .5% extra body fat...I am 6ft2 and 210lbs...I work out in the gym a lot. I scored 103/120 on the apcat test...so its fustrating to be kicked out due to a out dated way of testing your body fat index. Which is probably comes under the discrimination part of things.... I never once dropped the 135lb pull part of the program. While I saw others drop it, drag it and still pass... will I go back....mmmmm might not..i would if they did a standard test that was the same for both genders. Why do women need extra time on the course..cause I tell ya, there are probably a few women who could out run me no problem..and I respect that..
