How important do general police agencies put towards physical fitness? No offense, but I see overwieght officers all the time. Although I imagine that they became that way after joining. I'm roughly 30 pounds overweight (6'1", 220lbs). It's all in my gut and I don't look "fat," but I do have a very large stomach. Should I worry about losing this weight before the medical examination? I'm wondering whether a lot of departments put stock into things such as body fat (which I have a large percentage of) and BMI index, which I would be poor at.
Thanks!

*shrug* I guess if you can pass the physical agility test then you are good to go. I've seen officers who look grossly overweight, and they can out run me by leaps and bounds. As far as you can do the job then I woul assume that you are good to go. If you feel that being "30 lbs overweight" is an issue, then lose it, but if not, don't worry.

Check with the agency you are interested in or have already applied for. City of L.A. expects no more than 20% body fat for males and 30% for females(been a while for me,might be wrong as I'm a"little" passed that-lololol!!!) usually test via a girth test(good ol' fat pinchin') L.A. County Sheriffs has an actual scale of weight by in porportion(sp?) to height(use your browser to check out their recruitment web site ).I'm an 1 1/2" taller than you and about 30 lbs heavier, but I weight lift and am probably older than you( so watch the overwieght comments, bucko ;D ).it is imortant to maintain fitness not only to pass the entrance exams or the academy, but also for life. When you see some of those "overweight coppers",remember that some can carry the weight and do the job and that others are putting themselves at risk(other than car accidents, heart disease KILLS MORE OFFICERS than on the job violence) . for an example, consult the the L.A.S.D scale as I suggested (also should have age groups too).If you think you need to be a bit more trimmer, then do so...
