Hi, I'm new here and I have a question. I originally wanted to join the millitary right out of high school, but I was disqualified because I have a severe food allergy to peaunts. Would this allergy also disqualfy me from a career in LE? I'm 19 now and I'm about to finish my first year of college, and I need to start thinking about my career goals. I'm very interested in becoming a police officer, but I don't want to go to school for 4 years and find out that I'm DQed just like for the millitary.

Can't be any help with the allergy thing, seems strange to me though... In regards to the college, FINISH IT!! but don't focus on a degree that is of no use if you are not in LE. Take a degree in something else you are interested in, computers, health, accounting, whatever. Most of the time, when a department asks for post-secondary, they want it so that you have gotten some much needed life experience, and could care less what the degree is in. The other reason, and I'm sure any officer would back me up on this, is that you have a back up plan in case you can't be in LE. I know people that have wantted nothing else in life but to be a police officer. They worked security, the got degree's in criminology, they took self defence classes, negotiation training, etc, etc, only to be disqualified due to an unknown medical problem!! Now they don't know what to do. Only real option is private security, and that's not a police officer...know what I'm getting at? Never be afraid to try! If you try and fail, at least you had the guts to try... Enough of Rant... ;D J2D

jb11, Do your research now, check with the departments you may want to apply to. They are sure to tell you which medical problems are not accepted. At least you would know now whther or not LE is a career choice for you! Keep us up dated I'd also like to know how allergies are viewed.

Thanks you all for your help so far. I'm going to be calling a few local departments tomorrow to see what their various food allergy policies are. It's encouraging to see that someone can still work in the LE field with an allergy. It seems logical that if a person can be an LEO with a bee sting allergy, then someone with a food allergy would be allowed also. But ya never know.
I like the advice about college. I'm at a local JC right now and I plan on getting an AA in administration of justice and then transfering to a 4 year univerisity to get a BA in computer information technology. Does this seem like a good plan? Thanks in advance for the adivce.

Sounds like a plan to me! ;D
The computer information degree is something that is good for LE BUT it is also a good degree in the regualr work force as well. Sounds like a good choice for your degree. Good luck!!
