Hey, everyone. I was recently laid off from my most recent job and I am now looking at a few options.
I've received an offer from a private security company to be a supervisor for an eight person team on a rotating shift. I'm also in the running to be a civilian employee of the state police. They are looking to train people to work as telecommunications specialists in the 911 call center.
Does anyone have an opinion as to which position would offer me more skills or better experience for my future police department applications? I'll appreciate everyone's opinion.
Oh, and how should I handle the polygraph examination? I'm just kidding!!!

Well, since you asked about the poly.... ;D ;D
My feelings would lean toward the communications one. First it gives you an "in" with the department, Second, you will be trained to deal with stressful and overwhelming situations. You will learn how to handle difficult situations through verbal, rather than physical, means, which is something some officers lack.
I know a girl here in Calgary that was working 911, and mentioned to a co-worker that she was thinking of applying to Calgary City Police. This got around to a recruiter, and he came and told her to apply ASAP. I think she had about 6 months-1 year with 911. Needless to say she is now another proud member of the CPS.
I'm not saying that you are "guaranteed" a spot but it definetly won't hurt your chances.

Thanks, Journey. I think if I had both offers on the table, it would be a no-brainer. I can get a security job any day of the week. I've thought about it overnight and I want to go for the harder and more rewarding position.
Wish me luck. I've heard one in fifteen makes it to the final decision.

Well, I took the written test tonight and I have mixed feelings about it. The majority of it was a breeze, but the first section, worth only a small amount, was fairly difficult. We were given information in a rapid fire sequence and had to write it all down correctly. I'm sure I passed the test, and I'm sure I got one of the top scores.
I've always been a fast and accurate test taker. I blew through it in less than a half hour, while the rest of the class was shaking their heads in disbelief.
I'll find out the results in a week, and I'll update the thread when I get any additional information.
