I understand that some general skills in the military are related to law enforcement. I have over 8 yrs active duty in the army, with several peace keeping deployments to bosnia, etc. overseas service, field artillery in germany. I am an NCO, SGT/E-5. Can someone give me a basic outline how these skills would translate to general law enforcement?

Hmmm...military to LE....not an easy thing to do. I have 2 friends who are ex canadian millitary, and in talking with them there are alot of differences in how things are run...I would say that the biggest similarities are leadership, chain of command and following orders (more so with Federal LE, RCMP, FBI, etc) Biggest difference is that in the millitary, you are protecting (people, country, etc) but with LE, you are policing. It's a very different mind set. Not saying that the switch can't be made, since alot of people do it, but that it's sometimes more difficult to adapt and change the mindset.... An actual officer would be able to answer this better though... J2D

" journey" your answer was pretty much on the mark! Police Agencies(whether,state/Provincial/Regional/County municipal /District ) are "quasi-" or "para" military in command structure , and may even have rankings/positions such as Commander,Major,Capt,Lt Sgt,Corporal, etc. command structures have companies, divisions, platoons, brigades, squads. In major cities of county agencies, a station of division or precinct may have a deploymen of company strength (about 150- 200 officers and command staff). Academies or training facilities avg from13 -28 weeks in the US (some you have to live at in barracks style housing) the best thing that you'll be used to is the P.T. firearms trng, drill and early morning/night trng .Since I'm assuming you'll be departing your military career with an honorable discharge ,you can get military"points" added to you overall test scores, and that will put you up on the candidate list fairly higher than say a civilian with basic H.S. education. Also prior military and civilian applicant with higher education tend to promote faster in their repective agencies. Check www.officer.com for the state(s) you are interested in working /living in . you'll find what opportunities are available with the agencies listed ( example: the CHP or CA. Highway Patrol has a rapid entrance program for current military personnel that want to join ) Good Luck

I happen to have 8 years Active Duty as a MP and have been top Bosnia and in Germany as well. I just got hired for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in MD and I can really say that a military background has helped me out. I think that they look at you as if you are more mature and have leadership as you need that to stay in the military. I am a SGT as well. I think that it will give you more of an advantage as it has done for me. Hope this helps
