Hello All,
I just recently applied at a local PD. I beat the pants off everyone on the PT test, I scored 98% on the written (reading, math) test and I was told that I scored very highly on the board interview by two of the board members. I thought I had the job wrapped up. Then I got the Call: I registered as "not recommended" on the Psych test ! I couldn't believe it ! Anyway, I've applied at another dept. close by and I have to take the same test. I believe this one is the READ pysch exam. Can anyone give me some info/tips on being "recommended" by this thing?

First, let me say I've never gotten to the psych. examination portion of the selection process. So congratulations on making it so far in your first attempt.
As far as the psych. test goes, I think this is the one test I wouldn't want to help someone pass, even if I had knowledge of the test in particular.
Psych. tests try to measure a lot of the intangibles, like maturity, temper, and emotional stability. These are areas which are harder to measure than physical ability or intelligence. No matter how strong or smart a candidate is, if he is unable to handle the responsibility, the difficulty, or the stress of the position, he should not be approved for the job. It costs a lot of money to train and equip an officer. Departments want to have faith that the candidates they select are prepared for the demands of being a police officer.
Now, I'm not suggesting you're immature, or have a short temper, or some sort of emotion instability. I just think you need to pass this test on your own in order to prove yourself worthy of the position.
Good luck!

ArchdukeofTops:
You basically summed up my process in my search of becoming a LEO. I was astonished to find out that I was a "not recommended" also.
I assume that you are in the same boat I am and told that they can't discuss the particulars about why you were turned down. However, I was able to weed out the whys and am now working on those.
For instance, I came across very laid back and unagressive. The Dr. asked me how agressive I. I gave a nice "oral board" type answer. Well he was trying to work me up to see if I would rise to the challenge. Another was the HR dept was able to relate some things that she saw and stated that "perhaps" that is what the psych saw too. Like Command Presense needs to be worked on and forwardness. So, in my ramblings, what I am trying to say is this; think back to your test and see if there is any reason you think you may be not recommended. Call HR and get more information if you can... Most won't give you any info if you ask out right. Think of questions like, I know you can't tell me particulars about my file, but what is it you are looking for in a person in general.
Don't get discouraged. Psych is very subjective. One person may deny while another allow an applicant through. Oh and the pass/fail rate at the dept i applied for was 50%. Ouch! So you aren't alone... and no, there isn't any thing wrong with you. Take this as a learning tool and Good luck next time!

thx for the reply guys. I'll take it again within the next month so we'll see.
If I had to guess why I failed the test I would say I read into the questions too much because I tend to over analyze. I'm gonna use a different strategy on the next one.
