Hey all, I wasn't able to access the site for a bit, but today its finally working, anyway, I just got hired as a seasonal officer. I start training in may and will work though labor day. I am grateful to be able to gain some experience in LE before I devote the rest of my life to this careear. I am interviewing next week for the PA state police next week, I am confident that I will do well, I think my luck has a lot to do with how many candidates they will accept. I know my backgorund will fly I have never had a run in with police and am also 100% drug free. I have had aserations to be a LE for years and thankfully made some good decesions as a kid. Stay safe out there.

Hey, congratulations on your new (if temporary) job. I'm sure the experience will help.
Where is your assignment? I know there are a few departments here in Delaware that hire seasonal officers for the beach communities.

Sounds like fun. Just north of OC are the Delaware beach towns, like Rehobeth and Dewey. I know they also hire seasonal officers.
I looked into it in the past. I didn't pursue the option for financial reasons (a hundred mile commute to make less money and be unemployed in four months). I'm curious about seasonal positions, though. Maybe you could fill the board in on what seasonal police officers are expected to do. What kind of training will you receive? What sort of equipment will you carry? What will your primary duties be?

Lich, I apologize for my delay in the respose to your reply. I have been busy with school work, and other nonsense.
The seasonal officers in OC have full powers of arrest, and carry out many of the duties of the full time sworn officers. It is shift work, done over a 3 shifts. The duties which were described to me were as follows: Maintain public order. Basically keep an eye on the people having too much fun at the beach, people who have been drinking too much, open container, underage, property damage, drunk scuffles, etc. We also will handle complaints from residents, and complete reports for damges to property, and somewhat smaller domestic incidents. The full time officers will handle the bulk of the more serious incidents, although seasonal officers may assist with these duties.
We are required to buy some of our duty itmes, such as the belts, with cases for handcuffs, mace, speedloaders, and the belt keepers and underbelt as well. There are some various other items as well. You will carry a gun, from what I understand it is a .38 caliber revolver, I understand they use the revolver because of the sandy conditons, and for cost saving. Most of the traning stresses on the safe use, and handeling of the gun, baton, mace, etc, as well was your various laws and procedures.
The process is described to my by others who have done it as a sort of "batism by fire" approach. It can be a highly stressful experience, and I am looking forward to it to test my abilites to handle such a responsible position, in such a short period of time. I have not done the job so I cannot give details as to how it is on the job, but I will be sure to let you all know at the end of the summer, how it all went down. Good luck to all.

Well now I'm just jealous. Just kidding. It does sound like a heap of great experience. I'm sure it will help you in the future - especially when you are facing the interviewers. The firearms issue, for me, lends credibility to the seasonal officer position. The public is more likely to see you as a legitimate police officer than a glorified security guard.
Does your handle imply you are specifically looking to work for the PSP? Just wondering. I've seen your recent posts to the board and I admire your style. Good luck with the summer job, I hope it leads to the career you're want.

Lich, I am planning on a careear with the PA State, and am actually currently in the application process with them, I completed the written and oral exams. Im ranked in the top 300 of about 900 candidates, but they did not specify how many candidates will go on for further processing, I scored about 170 out of a possible 200 points between the 2 sections. Next step would be the physical. Worst case scenario is I have to retest again. I have also herd rumors about budget cuts affecting some of the future classes, but that is beyond my control so Im not really worried about it. I figure I will apply where I can, get a job somewhere and then eventually work my way back with the state. As for now I figure this job gives me a good way to establish a relationship with a police department, for possible future full time employment. So it's off to the job with Ocean City for the summer, and the waiting game with PA. We all know how this goes!
