So, I filled out an application for a local department a few months ago. They invited me to take a written test, and also gave me information about the selection process. When I saw the intensity of the physical test (set for two weeks from the written test), I knew I had no chance to pass it, so I declined to take the written test.
I got a call tonight from an officer asking me why I didn't take the written test. I told him my position on the physical, and he informed me if I submitted an application after the end of this week, I could expect to take the written test in August or September (thereby giving me plenty of time to shape up).
Is this a sign the department is really short on manpower or are they taking a particular interest in my application? Maybe both? I'd like some opinions, please.

It could be that the recruiter was a bit low on the number of applicants, and his boss was lighting a fire under him to get more people into the process...

I have to agree with Dave. It sounds like they need bodies in the process. I think that so many people are eliminated for one reason or another, that the recruiters try to get as many people testing as possible. It's a numbers game! Whatever the reason, it sounds great for you. Get yourself in shape and go for it!!!
