i feel the polygraph is important to show how a candidate can respond to stress. The results are immaterial and should not be used to base a decision for hiring. for example if you ask if they ever stole from an employer, there might have been a time when they were young and committed that charge, but they failed to put it on the application, and their memory might have been triggered at the polygraph test time which would have produced a reading of telling a lie.

vtest, Polygraph "testing" is a fraud: it has no scientific basis whatsoever, and results in many truthful qualified applicants being wrongly branded as liars. The polygraph is not important "to show how a candidate can respond to stress." It's sheer quackery and should be completely abolished. For further reading on the polygraph (including a detailed description of the trickery behind it) see AntiPolygraph.org's free e-book, The Lie Behind the Lie Detector.
