Hey,
The Background Investigation is cake for the NYPD, I actually just found out I passed today. YAHOO!!!! I had a stop sign ticket 4 years ago, a misdemanor, and a not so good credit report.
As long as you follow instructions correctly, Tell the truth, do all the paperwork correctly, and do not have a felony, You should have no problem. Unless you have something hiding somewhere,. I gave my chance a shot and I didnt think I was going to Pass but I did, now I have to take the agility in APril.
The investigation took me 3 months that about how long it takes, for some NYPD candidates it should only be 6 weeks but if you have alot of info it will take longer. Well good luck and hope to see u in the academy.

How hard is it for a Canadian to join NYPD? I live only 6 hrs away in Montreal and have been there alot, but I don't know how hard it would be to get citizenship or if they are only looking for hometown New Yorkers. I have no priors and 2 years of Canadian military service, as well as my university complete. I know I can apply, but I would have to have citizenship before I am hired right? Any advice is welcome, thanks. BOSCO

BOSCO,
I know some U.S. police departments actively hire from their own cities -- for example, Boston will only hire Boston residents. However, NYPD isn't *exclusively* like that... a friend of mine from school (a university in Ohio) was hired two years ago, having no connection (residence, schooling, etc) in NYC. So, I'm not sure whether they give significant preference to New Yorkers, but it is at least possible to get hired as a non-New Yorker.

call 212-recruit, they can answer all your questions on residency. The only thing I can tell you for sure is that once you join you would have to live in New York State.

I dont think you have to be an american at the time of application for nypd but you must be naturalized when you are sworn in. If you are canadian and live close by, i dont see why you cant apply. bosco, montreal is only 6 hours from new york city! thats not bad, you should write the test no matter what. you got nothing to lose. what is wrong with canadian cops?

Does anyone know if the NYPD uses the 4 days on 4 days off work schedule system? I find this one to be the most beneficial for all cops and their families.

The NYPD is not on a hiring freeze as of now, They allways say that put it never goes through because the commisioner would never let that happen. They need NYPD officers if anything. Especially after 9/11 many put in double Overtime that they retired 2 years earlier. Bloomberg made a suggestion and it went out of control. So there is nothing to worry about

I am 29 years old and would like to become a NYPD police officer. I scored a 99% on the exam. My concern is that when I was 21 years old I worked at a bank and was terminated for "negligence" because $2,000 disapperared from my draw. I did not take the money but since it was my draw I was let go. Since then I have earned an associates degree and a bachelors degree as well. My work history since then has been spotless. My question is how far back do they check refrences? Would this hurt my eligibility? How should I handle this?

what type of work are u into now, jake? From what i remember of my days in commercial business, you should have been "bonded" (insured) as a bank clerk- the insurance rating was based on a background check which would have considered you as reliable around money/valuable assets, and would have protected the bank against loss due to your actions .Apparently there wasn't any criminal prosecution ( right ?).Contact a background investigator when you come to that issue during the process ( they'll still polygraph you , I think )..

The Background Investigation is cake for the NYPD, I actually just found out I passed today. YAHOO!!!! ---------- Hey congrats Robo, How do you know you passed you state you still have to take the agility. The NYPD investigators usually only tell you if you have a problem with something and at the completion if you call them they'll tell you if everythings in order or not, but you seem to have gotten an answer for the background almost after it was completed, HOW? Thanks, hopefully Ill see you in July
