Hi, I am only 20 yrs old and will be 21 in four months. I was curious if anyone has any tips to help my chances. Anything I can do in the mean time to adaqetly prepare myself for the academy. It will be for L.A, so Im not sure if that changes anything. Im not looking for an easy way in, I want to make sure im well ready for the road ahead. Any advice would be appreciated thanks.

What Agency are you applying for?Have you passed all qualifications? the reason I ask is that if you are a current agency recruit, then that agency will give you all the info you need. All so.Cal/No.Cal agencies have Academy orientation meetings to tell their candidates what to expect and what to do-it usually occurs 1-2 weeks before the actual start of the academy class at the latest!my advice is exercise(aerobic),push ups, running, stretching, sit ups, as well as reading!yes reading!! even if it is only the newspapers, keep up with current events, and practice your writing skills(buy a "spell check machine" if your spelling is poor). If you are looking to put yourself through an academy(non-sponsored /pre-service recruit or cadet). Check this sites listings of acadmies/ schools. Here in so. Cal you can look up Rio Hondo Colleges Academy (whittier,CA) Fullerton Colleges Academy(Fullerton CA) or GoldenWest College Police Academy (Orange Co.).The draw backs are that you aren't promised a "job" after you graduate, although you can get recruited with high GPA while you are in training, avg costs to put youself through are about$4,500.00, and you cannot WORK while in the academy(you'd never pass if you tried). If indeed you are going for "L.A.", meaning LAPD, then show up in a suit and tie or dress slacks/shirt, tie and sport coat( and dress shoes), been there, done that- You'll go to the Ahmanson Trng Center,5631 W. Manchester Blvd, and the first week or two will be orientation and swearing in, after that comes P.T. and the real "fun"... ;D

Hi, thanks for the response Im not exaclty sure which agency yet. I live out of state right now and theres things in the way preventing my application. (credit) I want to have that cleaned up before I apply. I do have the schedule from the lapd website for aerobics, what I should be doin. Ive been trying to quit smoking for the running part. Yes I do read the paper religiously everyday. The only thing Ive been scarred mostly of is my lung capacity (smoker) and physical requirements. (not extremely strong). The most information I have at this point is to take the one week out of towners program. I do have a friend in l.a. that would let me stay with them through the academy months, but do you know if there are city academies, facilites? That part I was unsure of, if its diffrent than Michigan. Since I dont live there I wanted to attened the academy full time under the impression your paid until graduation, then placement. And yes the qualifications are passed except for the credit check. No one working for lapd has wanted to give me much time and info since im out of town and still months away from 21 so its difficult to get all the information. And since i'll be using litterally every penny to clean my credit by my 21st birthday I wont be able to afford to live there through months of academy training IF I had to. (Would rather make it through without the help of my friend, and on my own fuel). I really appreciate your time and help Thanks

if you get yours;ef in shape and affairs in order, you'll have a better chance of to hired by an agency( but unlike LAPDs "out of towner" program most agencies will take a while, say 6 mos to a 1yr to hire you)- an option could be to move out here work and go to school , then put yourself through an academy(recheck my last posting on this issue) most acadamies asponsored or arranged through the local college district, ad you can take out a GSL (student laon) to cover expenses- some agencies even reimburse you the GSL payment .....good luck
