Hello, I am a 21 year old college student and about two years ago I wanted to become a police officer. I had always wanted to become an officer but about a year ago I decided to go into teaching and coaching. Now criminal justice has entered into my mind again but teaching hasn't left. I'm very confused and I realize that I am 21 years old and in need of a goal. Any personal experiences or advise you can give would be greatly appreciated. I've always respected police officers and their opinions so I feel it would be a great advantage to me to get some feedback. Thank you in advance.

John;
You could have the best of both worlds. Have you ever heard of a Training Officer?, that is a teacher, after about 2 or 3 years on the job you could become a training officer for your department. Many departments sponsor teams, and could always use a good coach. A qualified teacher could teach criminal justice classes at the local community college, or in the department itself.
As a teacher, it would be difficult to be a cop on the side, but as a cop, you would have many chances to be a teacher or coach.
So if you want to pursue LE work, go for it, and you may well get into the educational end of it, and have it all.
Good Luck. JimCMR

john, let me first begin by saying that i am not a police officer, just a "wannabe" offering his opinion ;D. i recommend looking into a police ride-along. this will give you a better idea of what the job is really like. try and talk with a variety of police officers. i don't know if your college sponsors job fairs, but depts are usually at those recruiting . remember, in order to be a police offer you do not have to have a degree in c.j.!! most depts just want to see that you have attained your bachelors or at least a certain number of credit hours. you have chosen two very noble professions, now do your homework ! the resources are out there you just have to utilize them. one more thing, check into a police explorers group in your area, although there are age limits. best of luck in your decision . junior 8)
