Several weeks ago, I posted a question asking for input about previous drug use and police work. I was the 45 year old law librarian who had gotten into a bodybuilding substance, GHB. I am now clean.
I mentioned on this list that I had my passed the written adnphysical and was moving on to the oral boards. During the course of the interview, I was completely honest about my past use which, shall we say, was quite extensive. I was not a clean teen by any stetch of the imagination and tried just about everything out there. I received several posts, many saying that I would probably not have much of a chance, but good luck anyway. Everyone who wrote was most gracious, telling me that whatever I ended up doing, I should be proud of myself for being where I am today - clean and sober.
Well, guess what! The news arrived last week and I made it onto the eligibility list! I actually scored higher at the Oral Boards than I did on the written exam. INCREDIBLE! I am floating on air right now. There were 260 original applicants and 37 made it to the final list. So, commencing December 20th, I am official for one year! Wow, the power of positive thinking and honesty...they do work wonders.
I know there is still an uphill climb in front of me, as the poly and psychological and interview with the Chief are still ahead. (Only if I get called up, of course) However, what this does tell me is that I can do anything I set my mind to and that honesty is indeed the best policy. It also tells me that I do have a chance to start over, to follow my dream if I simply do the footwork to make it happen.
Thanks again for all your comments.
Best, Gayle
