Hey guys, my name is Santiago and I am currently applying the Metro dade pd down in Miami Fl. I already took the civil entry exam and although I haven't received the results yet I know I passed it with flying colors. However I am worried about my next step, the polygraph. The last time I used drugs was in March of this year 2001. The only drug I've ever used is marijuana and I've only done it about 6 times. To tell you the truth I regret even doing it I just had a very bad group of friends at the time. I am 21 yrs old, my question is do you think this will disqualify me?

santiago, this question is asked many, many times over . the best thing for you to do is to call the recruiter for metro dade and ask what their policy on past drug usage is. you don't have to tell them who you are, etc . past usage depends on the dept. it doesn't sound like you are a pot head;) but, the fact that your last usage was fairly recent could possibly pose a problem . whatever you do, don't lie about what you have done.....it may come back to haunt you . good luck. junior 8)

S-
Despite what the "minimum" qualifications may say, the fact is that most departments--especially large departments (like Metro Dade)--have enough applicants to where they take those with only the minimum qualifications and trash the apps. They may allow you to go through part of the process, but the fact is, you probably won't complete it. I started applying when I was your age and had done pot probably about as recently as you have. I wasted my time with department after department and eventually, three years later, got hired somewhere.
My point is that YOU'RE ONLY 21!! Time is on your side. First thing to do is STOP smoking pot AT ALL!! Get as much experience as you can working loss-prevention, armed security, or something that will increase your education and knowledge of law enforcement. Second, Volunteer with the local PD or the PD you want to get hired with. It really helped me and it shows dedication. Wait at least 2 years then apply again. Keep your nose clean and you should be successful.
Sorry it doesn't sound better, but I've been there and I wish I had all the time I wasted back. I learned a lot, though, and if you wish to chug on, I'd only say to learn all you can as you go.
Good Luck!!
