Hello everyone, this is the first time i have written although i have read all of your Q and A's tons of times. I am getting out of the navy in march of 2003, I am the only search and rescue swimmer onboard my ship and I am also part of the Visit, board, search and seizure team. I am trying to get into the virginia beach PD and I was wondering what would be some good tips on making myself look better than the other canidates trying for the same position. I have a year and a three months left and I would like to be fully prepared for the transition. Thanks for all your feedback. V/R griffin

Griffin;
Welcome to the Board. I am sure you know we all try to help the "Cops 2 be" get started.
Right off you have a couple points in your favor, your military, and the specialized duties you have.
You did not mention your education levels, a good start is at least 2 years of college, many departments require that or more, so if you don't have it, do your best to get it, or at least a good start on an Associates Degree (2 yr).
If you have been reading the Board, you know that Charlie will tell you to check out the department web sites, there is a lot of information there. You are smart trying to stick to a department that has water, due to your training.
Good luck to you. JimCMR

griffin--As you can see, Jim CMR seems to know me pretty good! I completely agree with Jim's assessment of your situation. He's covered everything I can think of. ;D
I think the important thing regardless is the educational factor. If you don't have college or a degree, work on that. I don't think you can ever have enough education!
If you can think of anything else later on, eel free to post it here. I am sure we'll be more than happy to answer anything you can think of.
Best of luck!
Charlie
