It is standard procedure at the department I'm applying to for the BI to do an informal follow up interview at the applicants home prior to giving his recommendation (or not) to the review board. My BI, like many others at the dept. is a patrol cop who takes on the investigations as extra work and was just coming off his shift when we had our follow up. He showed up on time but before I could warn him of the situation unfolding in my home, my cat startled him when he came racing through the living room in a black blur! If that wasn't bad enough, the cat was being chased by a three and a half foot long Iguana who had escaped from his cage and so far, refused to be recaptured! The importance of the interview was lost on me for a few moments at the site of this uniformed officer taking refuge on the couch on his hands and knees. Once I regained my composure I explained the situation and my lack of luck at trying to catch the little monster and offered to continue the interview at a cafe a block away. He must have been hell-bent on redeming himself because he refused but spent the entire interview keeping his eyes and most of his attention on the cat and Iguana as they chased one another through the house. It was an awkward situation but I think by the time he left, he could appreciate the humor of the situation. I bet though, he's grateful he didn't choose a career in animal control!
