What types of questions will the background investigator be asking my references? Are they similar questions to what they'd be asking my social acquaitances? If not, how would they differ? Do my references or social acquaintances have the right to refuse a question without it hurting my application?

Tommy--What kind of questions will be asked of you to your references are likely something like: * How long have you known-----? * Are you related to -----? * How did you become acquianted with-----? * What do you think of ----- becoming a law enforcement officer? Those are a few of possible basic questions. Course, depending on the applicant, one can throw in just about any other kinds of questions imaginable. Obvioulsy, the background investigator is going to be carefully listening to the responses given by people who are contacted. AND, obviously, we all know that people are typically going to list people who are NOT going to list a bad reference! ;D Knbowing that, B.I.'s are going to dig a little further and try and contact others as well to hopefully get a less bias response about someone. I would also say that the questions posed to your social acquiantences will likely be similar. Generally, questions usually start out general and eventually get more specific. Sure, people can refuse to answer anything they want because the contact with your reference is voluntary. Obviously, no one is under arrest or anything like that. Could their refusal to respond to a question hurt your application? Well, generally I think it would depend upon what the question is about or in reference to. Think about it a second, if I were to ask someone a theoretical question of, for example: "Have you ever known ----- to kill anyone before?" And the person refuses to answer the question, what would you honestly think in the shoes of the B.I. checking out someone you might have to work with??? I think the answer would be quite obvious..... Charlie
