I went to the Air Force after high school and was hurt during a training exercise. I was only in for 3 weeks and went home. (I was given the option to start the training over or go home.) I was told that I could re enlist after 6 months. Is this something that will be looked at in my background investigation? When filling out the application it asked if I had previous military service and what rank was I. I had no rank...I think. I was told this would not go on my record because it was not an Honorable or Dishonorable discharge. Is this something I should tell the police department? I was 17 at the time and I am now 33.

Sounds like you had a medical discharge. If I were you, I would definitely contact the military (Air Force) and find out your discharge information. I would think, even though you were in only 3 weeks, that they do have some kind of record on you. Based on what you've posted, my suspicion is you were given a medical discharge that should state something about you being discharged "Under Honorable Conditions." It's important to find this out because probably most departments require an honorable discharge from the military if you have prior military service. ;D Yes, I would definitely tell any prospective police department about this information. Not telling them would likely be a problem for you. Besides, based on what you wrote anyways, why would it be viewed as something "bad" to begin with? Stuff happens and as long as you got a viable explanation concerning your particular situation, it should not be a problem. 8) That's the way I see it anyways. Any other thoughts from anyone else out there? Charlie

Somey; About your rank, everyone has a rank in the military. Most likely yours was A/B or Airman Basic, at least when I was in the AF that was the rank structure.
As Charlie said find out about your discharge, most likely it was a medical under Honorable Conditions, from what you said, of course if you intentionally injured yourself, things could be different.
Good luck JimCMR

Charlie and Jim,
Thank you for your comments.
They had me climb a telephone pole with the spikes tied to my boots. While climbing the pole, part of the pole splintered off and I threw out my back. I tried to stay in my group, but was told to go to medical. They did give me the option to start training over again or go home. I chose the later. I think that this was actually an Entry Level Separation. Any idea if that would affect me? I went to my doctor when I got home and he told me that there was nothing structurally wrong and that I had just pulled some muscles. I then decided to go to school instead of the service.
