I am trying to get into LE at age 33. I have read that most agencies will credit you 1 year over their cut off age for every year served in the military up to something like 5 years. Being so close to the cut off age for a lot of agencies, I am considering joining the Air National Guard if I don't get hired by an agency after a reasonable amount of time. I would do my 4 years guard and then apply for an LEO job after I get out. What I am wondering is, will the departments credit me for military time served even if I only end up going regular guard, versus full time guard? If I end up only being able to get a regular guard position here, I will re-apply to the departments around here, but I am also realistic about my chances of being hired as a guard member. Thanks, Lisa

Lisa--This is not my realm of expertise but I think a lot of agencies are looking at ACTIVE service years as opposed to Reserves or Guard military service time. There is a difference. I dare say it is not viewed as the same thing. BUT, I'd be willing to bet there are definitely more qualified persons here who could likely give a more definite answer to this issue than I've given on this subject. 8) Sorry..... Charlie

Charlie, That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure. I was hoping that if I could go full time guard, that it would be viewed the same as active service, considering that the full time guard member performs their duities full time in uniform, the same as the regular active duty member. I can understand to some degree why part time (weekend- warrior ;D) guard would not count. I would go regular Air Force, but I'm too old, 27 is the cut off age. Even though my husband is an AF recruiter, I doubt that he could come up with enough waivers to get me in. I had a room full of recruiters tell me otherwise at the annual training conference in November, of course it could have been the alcohol talking. The AF really needs to re-evaluate their age cut off policy. They should look at all applicants after 27 on a case by case basis, employing an age cut off of around 35. The AF is always complaining about needing to put more people in, but with the age cut off they eliminate a lot of otherwise suitable applicants. It would sure make my husband's job easier. 8) Lisa

Lisa;
Just to add my two cents. I can only speak for Illinois, but I don't know of any military age extensions, there are extensions for active full time officers from other police departments when applying.
Here, any military credits must be for full time active service, no Guard or Reserve time counts, and of course an Honorable Discharge is necessary.
