TO ALL Just a couple of more oral board questions from my oral board today. A child asks you "Why do Cops drink Beer?" What do you tell them? In order of precedence 1 2 and 3 what is your ranking of these statements Taking a person to jail Issuing a traffic citiation Helping a citizen with a problem Why? You and your partner arrest a suspect. as your partner cuffs him a wad of about $200 falls to the ground. Your partner pockets the money and never mentions it again as you book the guy. What do you do? You go to a party and the people there start smoking pot what do you do? I think I gave some good answers. Just put this out to maybe help someone else later. Thanks to all who posted earlier that helped me out. TJ

tj,
here are my thoughts on your questions: 1.taking a person to jail 2.helping a citizen 3.issuing a citation the reasoning behind my answers are as follows, if a person has done something that warrants them being taken to jail, obviously they have put their welfare as well as the publics in jeopardy. a very close second is helping out a citizen. it is one of the most important functions of your job. thirdly, a citation is important, but not over the other two. as an officer you should use your good judgement to determine when issuing a citation is necessary.
regarding the money, i would give my partner the benefit of the doubt and assume that he forgot. i would simply remind him to check the money into evidence. if he failed to do so or said that he planned on keeping it, i would report it to our immediate supervisor. the only thing worse than crooks, are cops that are crooks.
regarding the party, i would probably make a call to the station to send somebody over. depending on the number of people and whether my safety would be in danger, i would identify myself as a police officer, and place them under arrest. if there were too many i would take mental notes, and play it cool til the calvary arrived.
