I just wanted to let you all know that I took my 100-question written test a couple days ago and I just finished my Oral Board examination this morning.
I believe I did very well on the written test. I'm still a little worried about my oral board examination, though. I was fairly nervous and can't remember half of what I said.
Basically, this agency had me look over 2 or 3 different scenarios on paper in a room along with 4 or 5 other candidates. We had 15 minutes to look over the scenarios and to write down notes and responses on scrap paper. After the 15 minutes we were taken before our own individual boards in seperate rooms. They sat me down in front of a Police Officer, a Sgt. Officer and a Lt. Officer. Each one asked me to summarize the scenarios I had just reviewed and asked me what my responses were to each scenario. I was allowed to use the notes I had written previously. They then asked me the negative and positive aspects to my responses. Finally, at the end, the Lt. Police Officer did a "role-play" with me. I was to pretend I was a new officer and he was pretending to be my training officer. He then told me that I would have to work the 11pm - 7am shift, most weekends and most holidays (including Thanksgiving and Christmas). He then asked how I felt about that and asked me to list positives and negatives regarding the information he had just given me. He then told me that during this shift I would be required to check up on the security of office buildings (ensure they are locked, no prowlers, etc...) continually listen to my radio and to fill out various reports. He asked me which of the three I would enjoy doing the most and why. Then he asked which of the three I would LEAST enjoy and why. Afterward they asked me if I had any questions and let me leave.
Like I said before, I can't remember half of what I said, but I don't think I said anything drastically wrong. Also, it seemed like two of the three officers were in an impatient, bad mood this morning. I couldn't tell if it was because of me or just them. Their body language wasn't exactly encouraging.
Overall, though, I think I did well. I used a lot of "Yes, sir's" and "No, sir's". I spoke up with good volume and tried to speak distinctly (even though my tongue got tied a few times). They said that the Oral Board examination would account for 60% of my overall score and that it would be combined with the score I get on the written test. After I took my written test a couple days ago, they scheduled me for the oral board examination as well as the physical agility test this Tuesday. I'll let you know how it goes.
Well, wish me luck.
