Hey guys I've been away for awhile since I was disqualified for a ticket I received in April 2001. However a year is up since i got that last ticket and I am planning to give it a shot at some other police dept. in the area. I suffer from a minor irregular heart beat. By minor I mena sometimes its not noticeable and about 10 % percent of time it is. I wanted to know if this in any way will affect my polygraph exam?? Thanks for the help.

Santiago--Interesting question and one I have never heard of before.....I don't think it would really make a big difference but, I think it would be prudent to tell the examiner about it. That way, if it somehow has bearing on the results of the test, they can take this information into account. One other suggestion: Don't fall into that trap of applying to several different agencies! (That is, if you are doing just that). I would recommend that you only select a few you have genuine interest in getting hired with. Why? Primarily for two reasons: (1) It MAY make otehr departments wonder why you were not selected by other departments and (2) Some departments might think you don't have a legitimate interest in working for them. Just my thoughts on the matter. Charlie

to add to what Charlie said -I recommend up to (5) area agencies only if you live in a major metropolitan area and up to 3 if it is a larger mostly rural area-you'll look consistent and focussed on the community you live in. Also, don't buy into that "beat the lie detector voodoo"- honesty is all that is required(I'm sure the examiner will go over what is expected and even practice exam before you start )Good luck....

Santiago, cpl_mike says, "Also, don't buy into that 'beat the lie detector voodoo' - honesty is all that is required." If you visit AntiPolygraph.org and check out our Personal Statements page as well as our message board, you'll find the stories of numerous law enforcement applicants who discovered the hard way that honesty is not necessarily all that is required to pass a polygraph "test." It would behoove anyone facing a date with a polygraph chartgazer to read carefully Chapters 3 & 4 of The Lie Behind the Lie Detector.
