Bad News

Well, Just when I thought everything was going great, I get a huge dose of the reality that is the LE hiring process. I called the personnel and training person at the Portland PD today to ask a few questions about my Background book, and The personnel person told me that she had been meaning to get back to me, and that the committee (oral Board) had taken the info from the oral board interviews to be reviewed by the Chief, and that I was not amongst the candidates that will proceed through this hiring process, but I may be called back if after they get through the proceeding candidates, they find that they don't have enough viable candidates. I was also told that they may likely call me back in the fall to interview again if they are hiring again at that point.

Needless to say, I was completely taken aback, because I was told by the personnel person before the Oral Board, that if I was issued a background book, that meant that I had passed the oral board and would proceed through the process. I am obviously very disappointed, but I know that I can't let this keep me down, and I have to continue with my pursuit of a career as a LEO. There is another agency that I am interested in that has just announced that they are hiring three full time officers, so I will jump right back in and apply with them. I guess that this is so hard on me because Portland was where I really wanted to be. Oh well, as the old saying goes, everything happens for a reason.

Welcome to law enforcement fubars. I don't mean too sound negative myself, but I to have hung alot of hope on someones word, then found out they didn't know what they were talking about or were simply wrong. The best I can say is take solice in the fact that you made it that far. You gained VERY valuable oral board experience. Experience you only get the hard way. Plus think of where you are since you started. You may have had a couple down falls but all and all you are higher up then when you started. Be persistant. You already showed that you are, just keep up the good work.

Is that your first board? If it was and you passed you should feel very happy about that.

what!?! I'm sorry to hear that, but don't give up hope.It could be possible that the other candidates used military points(common in civil services appointments) or had experience with othe L.E. agencies ( as Dispatchers,volunteers,reserves).Do just waht you planned and apply for that other agency,but keep your head up-your still on the road to success....!

Hey T.COTE & cpl_mike,

  Thanks for the encouragement, I was really bummed out but I refuse to let this get me down. I actually may have an opportunity to be a summer reserve officer at a dept here that gets very busy in the summer, due to tourists. (Like just about every town in Maine, lol) I just turned in my background book today, I completed it in only two days, because they are working on a deadline. I was referred to this dept. by a federal officer that I know that picked up a side job there on their summer reserve. They seem like a good dept, and the people there are really friendly. This will be a chance to gain some experience; Wish me luck.  

If I am picked up by this dept. I will be in the 100 hour pre-service with you T.COTE, so we may get a chance to meet after all.  8)  They are going to try to rush my background so that I can make it in time for the classes.

T.COTE, yes this was my first oral board, I had an interview at a smaller dept. with just the chief and the Patrol SGT. but never an oral board before this.

cpl_mike, I think that Portland may have had a few laterals apply as well, I had one from NYPD in my physical agility test group, and of course, they will take laterals over newbies so they can put them right to work. I do hope that the NYPD lateral that I tested with made it though, he was a nice guy.

Oh well, back to the grind, I have to get to my volunteer job in a few.
